Spelling Bee Success

On Wednesday, October 19, a group of Grades 2 to 5 RMS students competed in a Spelling Bee at the Four Corners Branch of the Brampton Public Library. We had just started a Spelling Bee group in our extended-care activities and thought that this local competition would be a good place to start! The students practiced very hard within a short time frame in order to get prepared. We are very proud of the amazing job that our students did, competing with such great skill and confidence. We are very pleased to announce that in the first round, Kayla M. (Grade 2) and Reyaansh G. (Grade 3) both earned first place in their grade levels. During the Championship round, that hosted all of the winners from all of the library branches in Brampton, Reayaansh G. took 1^st place for all of Grade 3. We are so very proud of all of the students and their accomplishments, and we are looking into other Spelling Bee events in which the students of RMS can participate.

FALL into FUN Family Activities!

As the warm summer temperatures begin to take a dive and the Fall chill fills the air, it can be easy to get caught up in the negatives of the impending bad weather. But if you spend time lamenting summer’s end, you’ll be missing out on all that Autumn has to offer! Sure, the weather is getting cooler, and the sun is setting earlier, but the trees couldn’t look more beautiful, all dressed up in warm Fall colours. Even more, there are still many fun-filled family activities to take advantage of!

Family-run farms are great places to spend some time outdoors! Many of them offer tons of hay bales to play on and large pumpkin patches to wander through and pick your own future jack-o-lantern. You can also choose a farm with pick-your-own apples! After a few hours spent outside, you can spend a bit of time wandering through the gift shops and sampling locally made jams and dips, then warm up with some freshly made hot apple cider! Check out Spring Ridge Farm, Downey’s Farm, and Andrews’ Scenic Acres for a full list of their Fall activities.

Not really an outdoors person? That’s okay! The changing leaves make for some beautiful scenic drives. Each day, the Ontario Parks website updates the percentage of leaves that have changed colour, and lets you know the best places and times to drive through the parks. Close to home, there is a beautiful drive along the Forks of the Credit Road, in Belfountain, just north of Caledon.

Canada is a land of seasons! So start embracing the changes and go out and enjoy all the beauty that Southern Ontario has to offer!

Thanksgiving Gratitude (from a 5-year old)

Gratitude is a vaccine, an antitoxin, and an antiseptic… Gratitude can be a vaccine that can prevent the invasion of a disgruntled attitude. As antitoxins prevent the disastrous effects of certain poisons and diseases, thanksgiving destroys the poison of fault-finding and grumbling. When trouble has smitten us, a spirit of thanksgiving is a soothing antiseptic.”

Everyone needs a mentor, a person who models for you how to be a great human being. We need a person you look up to and say, “I’d like to be like her when I grow up.” As an educator, I model this behaviour in front of our 5-year old students in our Prep-ONE class on a regular basis. I always show and teach them to be thankful in life. I always demonstrate gratitude towards small and larger things in our world. Each morning, I teach my students to be thankful for our school family and the opportunities we have to learn from each other.

We celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October, and this is what we are celebrating this weekend. Our children are learning what Thanksgiving is and how do we celebrate it in Canada.

We have been talking to our students and teaching them to always be thankful in life and to show gratitude to their parents for providing food, shelter, and an education. During lunch time, we talk about being thankful for food, and we make sure not to waste it because too many children in our world are hungry.

The students have been creating crafts and writing small poems expressing their thankfulness and love. One student wrote the following:

Dear Mommy and Daddy,

These aren’t just turkeys

As anyone can see

I made them with my hands,

Which are a part of me,

This comes to you with lots of love,

Especially to say,

I hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Reflections of Leadership – Student Essays

The following excerpts are reflections of the Grade 7 students’ experiences at Leadership Camp:

My first time going to camp was so much fun! I learned quite a lot of things I never thought of doing, but with the help and support of my classmates, doing them was pretty fun.

I remember when everyone was going on the high ropes course. At first it looked fun, but when I got up there it was so scary. I tried not to look at the ground. As I got to the last rope I said, “That’s it.” So I told Courtney [our camp leader] I didn’t want to do it anymore, and she told me to lean back and let go, so I did. When I got to the ground I started to cry. Courtney told me I did so well, but I didn’t think so. I thought I could have done better and made it all the way to the top.

The next day, after lunch, we went to go do the low ropes course. It was a fun team effort; we had to get everyone through the holes that were formed by ropes. So, what we did was have two strong people lift the shorter people to the top and put them through the top holes. After that, we decided who would go through which holes on the bottom.

Later that day, we all had to get into groups of three because we were going canoeing. At first, it was really hard learning how to row, but I got used to it. As we were rowing, we bumped into a few trees, but then we made a plan to make a steady beat so we could all row at the same pace and the same time. We started going faster and soon we were making nice sharp turns. I learned that we needed to take our time and actually work as a team. We got back to the dock second last, but we worked hard and had fun, so we were all winners.

After that trip, I have gotten more confident with myself because of my classmates’ help. I am starting to reach my goal to talk louder and be okay with how I sound and what I say. My best friend is always there for me, and she is my biggest inspiration; without her, I wouldn’t be where I am now. If there were an inspirational award I would definitely choose her to win. So overall, I really loved this trip and I will never forget it.

Last week I had the privilege of going to Leadership Camp. Yes, I did a lot of fun activities, but I learned some valuable things, too.

I think the majority of people think “leadership” means to be the one in charge. They think it means that they are the only ones allowed to lead. This concept is completely against teamwork. At camp, one of the concepts we focused on was “fellowship.” We participated in different activities that taught us not only how to lead, but how to let others help you lead too.

Along the lines of “fellowship,” we also focused on the idea of “support” (a good leader has to be supportive). The high ropes course, rock climbing, and the Leap of Faith were very frightening for some people, including me! Support from my peers was definitely the only thing that kept me going. In order to be a good leader, you need to support people mentally and emotionally (i.e. with the decisions they make) as well as when they do physical tasks.

Leadership Camp is three days without your parents. I don’t have any problem spending time away from my parents, but I’m sure other people do. Parents are always there for you, and when you leave home, you not only feel sad and homesick, but you also feel like you can’t do anything. While spending time at camp, you build valuable skills you’ll use later on in life when you’re living by yourself. I would definitely recommend to parents to send their children to camp. You build memories there – valuable memories, fun memories. They are the best memories you will ever make.

I learned a lot of different traits at camp this year. The camp leaders emphasized leadership as a big and valuable trait at camp. The activities we did there required a lot of leadership, support, courage, empowerment, and kindness.

We showed support at a lot of our activities. At the high ropes course and rock climbing wall, we cheered on everybody so they would gain more confidence. It did help them, but some people did not need it. I learned that leadership is not only guiding someone, but also helping them and supporting them. Camp taught me a lot about how to trust someone on the low ropes course; we had to carry some people through a rope web without actually touching the rope itself.

Camp is a great way to experience different things. If you have never been away from your parents, this is a great way to come out of your comfort zone. If you do not like heights, camp is a great way to get over your fear since you are climbing and jumping off things.

Camp teaches you a lot of discipline and encourages healthy habits for meals. If you put a lot of food on your plate, you still have to finish your food so up don’t waste anything. If you normally have juice with every meal, you need to make different choices. Each table has to have two pitchers of water before you can have any juice. You do not get juice for dinner; it’s only milk or water. You have to use polite words if you want someone to pass the food. That is what I learned from camp.

Learning to Lead

As teachers and parents, we strive to develop our children as a whole, ensuring they flourish academically and develop all aspects of their personalities. We provide our students every opportunity to grow as individuals, both in school and in the real world.

Every year, our Grade 7 and 8 students participate in the Leadership Program at the YMCA Camp Ki-Wa-Y. This opportunity allows students to experience independence and responsibility on this three-day, two-night trip. On a daily basis, students are given the chance to develop their leadership skills through a variety of activities and daily chores, from setting the table to taking on the high ropes courses. This combination of freedom and responsibility, while providing them with a structured program, allows students to experience leadership in an environment conducive to individual growth.

Every camp experience is reflected upon and talked about as a method of development, and students write a personal reflection of their time at camp. Reflection plays a large role as it allows the students to stop what they are doing, sit down in a beautiful location, and quietly contemplate why they are at the camp. They focus on what they have learned, and they analyse their own strengths and weaknesses.

Using teamwork skills to build a shelter in the woods

From a teacher’s perspective, I found this camp to be a great life experience. Watching our students go through new experiences, and watching them push themselves is what makes this camp so amazing! Watching the students descending from the high ropes with smiles on their faces allowed me to see that these students believe in themselves and that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. These are the moments that make being a teacher so rewarding. Year after year, this YMCA Leadership Camp provides our students with the skills they need to succeed and the opportunities to step out on their own and experience personal success. It is a true pleasure to watch as our students develop and grow into the achievers of tomorrow.

Manners Matter

Using good manners is an excellent habit for all us to practice on a daily basis. Is it really a lost art, or do we still have enough etiquette inside each of us to be able to share our knowledge with all of the young children that we encounter daily?

Let’s think of the first few words that should be spoken first thing in the morning: they are simple and could quite possibly make someone feel important. What might those be? Why, it’s “Good Morning!” and “How are you today?” Think about how amazing hearing those words makes you feel. How do you think it would impact someone who may have woken up on the wrong side of the bed? They make you feel that you are someone who is important to those around you.

Looking the person who you are speaking to directly in the eyes always helps with getting a message across more meaningfully. They need to know that you are speaking to them and that they have your full attention.

A smile – what a great thing to show to people around you! Not many of us know how to show a smile anymore; we often become straight-faced and show our exhaustion. It’s so simple to show someone that you wish them well and want them to have a great day, just by flashing a smile. A simple smile is all it takes to make someone’s day, and you’ll never know how much of a difference you’ve made. Does it not make sense to all of us to be able to be comfortable in our surroundings and feel welcomed and at ease? It makes our days better and things just seem to flow with greater ease around us.

Life lessons are learnt at a young age at RMS

A simple “Please” and “Thank you” – words that are very rarely spoken, but words that should be spoken without any hesitation, consistently, every day. Before you walk away from someone that has given you something or has done something for you, stop and think… Remember those simple kind words. Remember that actions and words which are filled with kindness and respect will make you feel good, and everyone around you should feel fantastic as a result.

Remember that manners matter:

Be polite
Say hello
Offer to help
Hold the door
Smile
Pay a compliment
Use” please” and “thank you”

Back-to-School Anxiety doesn’t last long at Rowntree!

In August, as students creep closer to accepting the inevitability that school is just around the corner, anticipatory back-to-school fretting kicks in.

While our littlest ones may find it both exciting and anxiety-provoking, they may also be apprehensive about taking on more responsibility and independence. Spending recess in a new environment, meeting new friends, and adapting to a new social setting all prove to be challenging at this stage of schooling. They may describe their anxiety as “butterflies in my tummy.” They may not have much of an appetite in those days leading up to the start of school, and they may take a longer time falling asleep or become clingy. All of these are common symptoms observed by both parents and teachers come September.

For the Middle School students, their reality may be somewhat different; by now, they would have developed a comfortable knowledge of the inner workings of their school, but still they may experience anxiety as September approaches. Not being too sure about the new teacher, new curriculum, and new rules can be overwhelming! Remaining positive and assuring children that all bumps in the road have workable solutions is the best way to deal with the usual September issues. Another problem that Middle School students face is being separated from their class buddies from the previous year. Reassuring them that they can always reconnect outside class hours will probably help them to settle down.

We make every effort to ease these transitional traumas and create a “home away from home” atmosphere at RMS. The first few school days in a child’s life are crucial as students are expected to learn the rules that they will have to follow for the rest of their careers as students. Not only do they learn the ways of a new academic regimen, they are also expected to adjust to a new timetable, teachers, new students, and familiarize themselves with a new school setting. Once they become comfortable and cozy, there is no looking back! By the time October rolls around, at the end of a long and productive day, our student are rarely ready to say goodbye! Parents who once had a hard time leaving their children at the classroom door are often left hanging around in the hallways at the end of a school day, patiently waiting for their children to pack up and say goodbye to their friends. Now that truly speaks to the level of comfort that our students enjoy within the nurturing environment found at Rowntree.

Setting Our Kids Up For Success

As a parent and teacher of middle school aged children, I am constantly reminded that one of the best gifts we can give our kids is a safe learning environment that sets them up for success. By helping our children to navigate the learning process successfully, we help them to ensure that they become resilient, life-long learners. This doesn’t mean, of course, that we protect them from disappointment or failure. Rather, it means that we create the conditions where they can experiment with new knowledge and understanding without fear of failure, and that when they do fail, they are able to learn from their experiences!

This approach to nurturing today’s young learners can, and should, apply not only to the academic environment, but to day-to-day situations as well. This is why I was so thrilled to be involved in Rowntree Montessori Schools’ sleep-over for grades five and six.

One of the key objectives of this event was to allow students who may not have had the opportunity yet to sleep away from their parents and/or extended family, to experience what it is like to be away from home. These students participated in a limited one night sleep-over which was close to home, in a familiar environment, and with their classmates and teachers. In doing this, these students were bridging their experiences with what was expected of them while on a three-day leadership camp outside of the city later in the spring.

On the evening of the sleep-over, after the post-school supervision had finished, the students came together and completed a number of chores. First, they set up their sleeping quarters. The boys took one of the large classrooms, and the girls had the library. Next, they were called down for a pot-luck dinner where not only did they eat together, but they also set up and helped clean up their dining area. This pitching-in part of a collective group to complete a set of chores is extremely important in setting a child up for success as an adult. In an on-line article for Business Insider’s Career page, Drake Baer and Rachel Gillett wrote about elements that science indicates can be used to predict kids’ success as adults. The top item on this list was kids doing chores. In the article they talk about how Julie Lythcott-Haims, former Dean of freshmen at Stanford University and author of “How to Raise an Adult” stated in a TED Talks Live event that ‘kids raised on chores go on to become employees who collaborate well with their coworkers, are more empathetic because they know firsthand what struggling looks like, and are able to take on tasks independently.’[1]

In the same article, the number two thing that helps children succeed as adults is to learn social skills. In a large study tracking over 700 students, published in the American Journal of Public Health in November of 2015, there was a connection made between learning social skills at a young age and success as an adult. Kristin Schubert, director at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation who funded the study, stated that “This study shows that helping children develop social and emotional skills is one of the most important things we can do to prepare them for a healthy future.”[2] During the sleep-over, a key focus was on building community and strengthening the students’ social skills. Not only did this occur between the students and their fellow class-mates, but also between the students and the grade seven and eight student leaders who directed most of the activities. What better way to get used to interacting with other people than to spend a night in the same room as a large group of your peers with all of the different personalities, bedtime routines, and sleeping habits? Social skills were also worked on through a number of games and fun activities in which the students participated. The most interesting and exciting of these games for the students was “Hunger Games”. In this, the student leaders of the school converted both levels of the school into a maze where they directed the younger students in a type of freeze-tag using cotton snowballs. They also enjoyed challenging the teachers in King Cone.

Finally, I feel that this is a great event as, not only does it benefit students in the ways already mentioned, but it also helps us as teachers see the kids in a different light. By engaging with the students outside of the regular classroom, the teaching staff is able to build a stronger connection with the students, and to discover more about them. This allows us to be more effective in the classroom. And in the end, it will not only set up our students for success on outings away from home, but it will also be another experience to support them on their journey towards adulthood.

Developing a Child’s Mind, Body and Soul

I have been a strong believer and follower of yoga ever since I can remember. Yoga has helped me to keep balance in my own life, it has taught me to be more patient, and helped my body stay healthy with flexibility. Seeing the positive effects it had on my own life, I decided to introduce a yoga program to our students. The children gather every Wednesday morning in the gym for a 30 minute practice session to learn and sharpen their yoga poses. The poses are done standing, sitting and lying down. Each pose challenges various muscle groups while helping a child become aware of his/her body and how it efficiently functions. Yoga poses enhance physical flexibility and strength because children learn to use their muscles in new ways.

Yoga helps develop focus, concentration, balance and dexterity. The poses which we practise during yoga encourage children to clear their minds and focus on the present pose. For example, when children were taught the tree pose, the first thing they needed to learn was to stand still. They did this by staying calm and finding something to focus upon. After accomplishing this stage, the children were then challenged to further their pose to the next level. Now being able to focus, the students learn to coordinate their movements so they are able to balance on one foot completing the pose.

As a result, children learn to focus and concentrate during class time. Yoga also teaches them to persevere, be patient and work towards daily goals. Teachers like me have found that incorporating yoga and meditation into the daily schedule has had a positive impact on the completion of daily tasks. It has enhanced and strengthened the quality of students’ learning potential, and helped them to sustain their concentration, therefore making them more productive during their work day and helping them to achieve success in their learning environment.

“Multiculturalism in Canada”

As we all know, Canada is a known diverse and multicultural country. We are home to people from very diverse backgrounds who have immigrated here and form a significant portion of our population. In 1971, Canada was the first country in the world to officially adopt multiculturalism; how amazing is that! It has not only given Canadian immigrants a sense of security, but also a sense of belonging. Our nation’s acceptance has given new and natural born Canadians self-confidence and pride to be part of a country with such a plethora of cultures.

It is our duty as educators to raise future citizens, and it is our job to raise them to respect who people are, and where they come from. This way, we can live in peace and harmony. If we can instil those values in them at an early age, it will become a way of living and thinking. Diversity is a national asset in Canada. By hosting “International Day” every year at RMS, we are molding our future citizens to embrace multiculturalism. It is a common saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” And as our school is a village in its own right, it is our responsibility to raise students to be appreciative and accepting of one and all, as we include all in this annual celebration of our collective and individual cultural pride!
