Encouraging Public Speaking

When RMS hosted its Annual Speech Night, it was a huge success! Our students’ faces glowed with confidence and pride because they knew that they had overcome their stage fright and were well on their way to developing their public speaking skills!

When speech night was first introduced, panic washed over the faces of the Grade One students. The very thought of having to stand up in front of a crowd to recite a speech was petrifying. Understandably, this feeling is not unusual, public speaking can be an intimidating experience even for adults. As a first step, we worked on introducing ourselves to an audience.  Once the students were comfortable with that, we started writing our speeches. We brainstormed possible topics and narrowed them down to our favourites. We made idea webs together, sharing what we would want to know about each other’s topics. The students asked each other questions that sparked imaginative ideas. They not only worked together as a team, but learned to contribute positively to another’s learning process. It was interesting to observe how these six year olds inspired each other to think from a different perspective, one that was not their own. After much thought and insightful discussion, we wrote our first draft, and what a success! The students were not only proud of what they had written but surprised at how well their speech sounded. Our speeches were ready for rehearsing.

Memorization was a huge concern from the beginning. Students practiced reciting their speech on a daily basis and with more practice came more clarity and expression. At the end of each practice, students offered each other feedback on how to improve their peer’s speech as well a “success sentence” about what they did well. As the much awaited day dawned, our brave and ever enthusiastic bunch were ready to take on the task of public speaking.

The words of encouragement that they offered each other were truly noteworthy. It was heartwarming to see their faces beaming with pride as they realized that they had achieved what they once thought was impossible!

FALL into FUN Family Activities!

As the warm summer temperatures begin to take a dive and the Fall chill fills the air, it can be easy to get caught up in the negatives of the impending bad weather.  But if you spend time lamenting summer’s end, you’ll be missing out on all that Autumn has to offer! Sure, the weather is getting cooler, and the sun is setting earlier, but the trees couldn’t look more beautiful, all dressed up in warm Fall colours. Even more, there are still many fun-filled family activities to take advantage of!

Algonquin Park in Fall

Algonquin Park in Fall

Family-run farms are great places to spend some time outdoors! Many of them offer tons of hay bales to play on and large pumpkin patches to wander through and pick your own future jack-o-lantern. You can also choose a farm with pick-your-own apples! After a few hours spent outside, you can spend a bit of time wandering through the gift shops and sampling locally made jams and dips, then warm up with some freshly made hot apple cider!  Check out Spring Ridge Farm, Downey’s Farm, and Andrews’ Scenic Acres for a full list of their Fall activities.

Not really an outdoors person? That’s okay!  The changing leaves make for some beautiful scenic drives.  Each day, the Ontario Parks website updates the percentage of leaves that have changed colour, and lets you know the best places and times to drive through the parks.  Close to home, there is a beautiful drive along the Forks of the Credit Road, in Belfountain, just north of Caledon.

Canada is a land of seasons! So start embracing the changes and go out and enjoy all the beauty that Southern Ontario has to offer!

RMS “Olympians”

“All work and no play makes Homer go crazy”, is a saying that not only brings a smile to the faces of many, but also holds a great deal of validity. Here at RMS we strive towards having an equal balance between academics, arts, and sports, because having all makes life fun! So what better way to encourage a healthy way of life than to host our very own “Mini Olympics”!? With our annual Olympic Games, we train our students to be a part of future competitions in life, and how to deal with the trials and potential challenges that can come with them.

Running the 100 metre dash

Through our physical education program, our students develop and hone their gross and fine motor skills, with the goal of utilizing these skills to help develop a lifelong enjoyment of sport and physical activity through events like our Mini Olympics. Winning is not everything, and neither is being the best; we must learn to deal with our own strengths and weaknesses in a healthy way.

Additionally, kids these days are getting fewer hours of physical activity than ever before; with technology so readily available, we must also help them to enjoy an active lifestyle. Therefore, through our integration of sporting days such as the “Mini Olympics”, we are able to facilitate a reinforcement of a healthy lifestyle that some of this generation’s kids are lacking. Lessons learned through sport also play an important role in helping children stay focused on a task, whether it is school work or other activities.

They play and compete amongst themselves in order to earn House League points. This gives them a head start to be our future Olympians!

Asian Heritage Day 2016

Each year, our school provides the opportunity to our grade 7 and 8 students to apply for, and join the Rowntree Montessori Athletic and Academic Council (RMAAC). One of the responsibilities of our RMAAC members is to run the Asian Heritage Day. This event is held annually in the month of May, which is Asian Heritage Month.

Welcome to Japan

Welcome to Japan

My goal as an RMAAC coordinator is to have each RMAAC member take progressively more and more responsibility and leadership while running these events. The “Asian Heritage Day” is the culmination of all the hard work our committed members put in to the council. The Asian Heritage event is each RMAAC member’s opportunity to shine and succeed as they demonstrate their growing leadership skills.  As a teacher and an RMAAC coordinator, I must say that it is a hard task to let your students go on their own and organize and run a whole school event day; it can be really quite stressful for me to entirely let them do their own thing.  An 8 week process, which begins with an introduction to the task and expectations, is broken down weekly to allow council members to organize their event. The first 2 or 3 weeks of planning give a great opportunity for me to sit back and watch the emerging leadership abilities of our members grow and shine.

Click on the image below to see some highlights of professional Sepak Takraw

The RMAAC members decided to create a day where each class had the opportunity to move through 6 different stations, each relating to a different country in and around Asia. The stations ranged from having your picture taken in front of a monument in Asia, to learning how to write Mandarin words, to even creating their own Chinese Lanterns. The creativity of each of our RMAAC members was astounding, and it helped to ensure the stations were not only fun for the students but that they represented and paid homage to Asian Heritage.

Looking back, it is with great pleasure that I am able to say what a success our “Asian Heritage Day” was. Planning the day was an invaluable tool to help our RMAAC members develop time management, communication and organization skills, among others, and it is the development of our students that is the greatest reward for me as an RMAAC coordinator.

We look forward to seeing you and sharing with you the private school community of which we are so proud!

Rowntree Celebrates Our Cultural Mosaic with Colour, Clothing, and Feasting!

Aloha! Velkomin! Shagatom! Shalom ! Bienvenue! Marhaban!

Does something sound similar? Yes, you got it right! WELCOME, from around the world!

This was the buzz at our Academy Campus on International Day.

Culture is a broad and complex term, and cultural identity comes from traits and values based on: ethnic origin, religion, gender, age, class, native language, geographical region, and other factors. For us, culture is much more than a study of food, fashion, folklore, festivals, and fame. We celebrate and share our diversity on a daily basis, both inside and outside of the classroom, in order to enrich the learning experience for our students and the whole school community.

RMS’ International Day is a wonderful opportunity for the school community to acknowledge and celebrate its diversity. Through food, traditions, costumes, and languages…students, parents, and teachers are reminded of the great number of commonalities and differences we have within our school, and are given an opportunity to be open-minded to others. Students are encouraged to express and share their cultural diversity through dress, cuisine, and décor, and to communicate information about their country, language, and culture  particularly during this school family event.

We feel it’s very important that we not only celebrate the rich mix of nationalities that we have at the school, but also encourage the children to learn more about other cultures. From the beginning of the day, the whole school enjoys a relaxed atmosphere, with all students dressed in their ethnic attire and enjoying a festive mood. The senior students begin transforming the gym into a dining hall. A big thank you goes out to our Rowntree parents for providing such delicious food! This cultural luncheon is wholeheartedly the generous efforts of our parent body. Their contribution of an ethnic dish transforms this lunch hour into a delicious sampling of foods from many cultures! And the senior students’ duty to see that everything runs smoothly is greatly appreciated!

Tantalizing our taste buds, international gastronomy, rich, vibrant cultural attire…..International Day at Rowntree Montessori Schools is nothing short of a valuable exploration of diversity. It is great mosaic that unites us all. No matter where we are from, we are all part of one inclusive and caring school community.

Developing Future Public Speakers

“There are three things to aim at in public speaking: first, to get into your subject, then to get your subject into yourself, and lastly, to get your subject into the heart of your audience.” – Alexander Gregg

In the month of March every year, RMS hosts its annual Speech Night for Primary and Junior Students, and Debate Night for the Grade 7’s and 8’s. Parents are invited to enjoy seeing their children present over the course of the evening. The whole school turns into an auditorium with individual classrooms hosting their speeches. By 6 pm, there is pin-drop silence, and with the introduction bell, each class starts their public speaking!

The Grade 2's talking about there adventures around the world!

A Grade 2 talking about her adventures around the world!

How lucky the students are to be able to talk about their traveling experiences

How lucky the students are to be able to talk about their traveling experiences

So, how do the teachers and students work together to prepare for this day?

Rehearsals start as early as January, when topics are chosen and researching is completed. Then, teachers guide students through writing, editing, and re-writing their speeches. Soon our hallways and classrooms buzz with students practicing their speeches. Cue-cards are used to overcome any uncertainty remaining, and on the final day, we see students standing with poise and confidence, all ready to deliver their speeches!

A very inventive speech night topic!

While captivating an audience is a skill that takes years to develop, starting as early as Grade one helps RMS students to perform better. By hosting Speech Night every year, RMS is not only enhancing public speaking skills, but also nurturing confidence in each student’s abilities.

Practice Makes Perfect! Talent Abounds!

Since the return to school after the Family Day long weekend, the students have been adding their final touches to their performances for the Festival of the Arts.

The audition process allowed staff to see a short snippet of the exciting acts that could potentially steal the show during the star-studded (because really, any student willing to get up on stage in front of the entire school deserves to be called a star!) event.

Each and every student spent recess upon recess, and likely lots of home time too, fine tuning their acts, working out the kinks and refining their performances down to the very last flick of the wrist or high note they knew they had to nail.

Auditions were an exciting and thrilling event, with all students cheering on their peers. This year, the audition process welcomed a stellar 36 acts, each and every one special in their own right. We are eagerly awaiting the final performances with baited breath!

Celebrating the arts at the Festival of the Arts!!

The Rowntree Montessori Academy Festival of the Arts (FoA) is an annual event that showcases the many artistic talents of students of all ages.

Students dancing together

Students have the opportunity to display their greatest artistic ability, whatever it may be.  From visual arts and performance art, to dramatic readings, dancing, and singing from the bottom of their hearts, the artistry that is displayed from the students just shows the ability of RMS children to create, practice, and execute a personal and complex piece of art.  (At times, even the staff members can be seen setting a fine example by performing themselves!)
