Technology in the Classroom

Many years ago chalkboards were the primary teaching tools in a classroom. It was fascinating to watch our teachers as they chalked their lessons across the board. Using coloured chalk was the most exciting part! Since then, teaching tools have evolved remarkably, some beyond our wildest expectations. Thanks to the advancement of technology, teachers and students alike can now enjoy a whole new range of high-tech tools in the classroom.

Students working together with technology

The introduction of Smart Boards in our classrooms was welcome with some reluctance. But the notion that these pieces of technology came with complications were soon swept away as we began to explore the many options they had to offer. Students enjoy their learning as teachers are able to enhance their lessons using a wide variety of tools available on these machines. Teachers are also able to monitor student learning and give instant feedback on their progress.

We also leverage Dash & Dot robots in the classroom as early as Pre-Kindergarten to teach programming and coding, as these skills are becoming increasingly more relevant for the future careers to our students. Also, through the use of Chrome Books and Google accounts, students have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers online to complete class projects and homework assignments. With this type of virtual communication, the need to visit a friend’s home to work on a project is also minimized and the goal is conveniently achieved!

Problem solving using technologyProblem solving using technology

One of the biggest benefits of using technology to teach concepts in the classroom is that students can manipulate them with ease, thus ensuring increased focus and consistent engagement in the lesson. Teaching students to drive their learning through the use of technology and collaborative learning experiences is surely setting them up for a successful and rewarding future.

STEM Your Way to a Greener Earth

As educators of the 21st century, it is necessary that we equip our students with the knowledge and the skill set which will ensure a successful and fulfilling career path. Therefore it is important that we support a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) approach to learning. Presenting children with real life situations and offering them opportunities to develop their critical thinking skills, make decisions independently, and collaborate with one another to find solutions to problems, are the key goals of a STEM approach to learning.

With Global Warming being one of the high ranking problems in our world today, we recently posed a question to our Grade 3 students. The answer to the question required a STEM approach to problem solving. We asked them to identify and construct ways to integrate green spaces into a crowded urban cityscape. Applying their knowledge of Science in Plants, Stability and Structures, students designed a simple building within a limited space. They also devised methods to accommodate adequate greenery on the structure while also maintaining its stability.

Carefully Thought out and Creatively Engineered

Using their rapidly evolving technological skills, students compiled presentations illustrating the process of seed germination. The germinated seeds were the plants that they used on their structure. The Mathematical component of the project included measuring the sprouted seeds and graphing the results. Through trial and error students had to experiment with a variety of seeds that would sprout easily and also maintain a steady growth. They had to source out the most effective materials that could be used to build their structure and sustain the sprouting seeds. The end results of this STEM project were nothing short of masterpieces!

The Finished Product

Thriving in an economically driven, global environment requires more than just a multidisciplinary skill set. The STEM approach to learning develops much more than a student’s problem solving, decision making and critical thinking skills. It shapes our students into persevering, committed and patient people who will embrace tomorrow’s challenges with flexible and open minds.

A Tribute to Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh, one of the greatest and most influential artists of the Post-Impressionism art movement, was the inspiration the Grade 1 students used to bring paint brush to canvas, in an effort to try their hand at this technique. The lesson began with a close observation of Van Gogh’s famous “Starry Night”. Students had the opportunity to describe the painting and share their opinion and interpretation of this unique piece of art. They observed how Van Gogh used lots of swirling strokes and different shades of blue to represent the wind.

Stirred by Starry Night, each of our Grade 1 students took to the canvas to try their hand at painting, Van Gogh style! Swish, swash, small swirls, big swirls and soon our classroom was filled with many amazing creations. Here are a few of our budding, starry-eyed artists with their finished products.

Achievements Acknowledged at Athletics Ceremony

We recently celebrated the achievements of our athletes at our yearly athletics ceremony. This year, each athlete showcased a winning attitude when interacting in either team, individual sports or the RMS Olympics.  We are so very proud of our athletes this year! As part of our athletic ceremony, a top athlete from each gender was selected in each grade, and the winners of the RMS Olympics were awarded. We also praised our mathletes for continuing to shine at mathematics, as we acknowledge the time both sports team members and mathletes put into practicing.  It is our goal to continue to encourage each student to participate in at least one athletic team, as we acknowledge the vital learning that comes from sports and the necessity of fitness in a well-rounded education.

As educators, we strive to do our very best to make sure that each of our students develops a well-rounded, positive attitude about learning and their well-being. Not only is each day filled with academic work and opportunities to master new competencies and skills, whether through sports or other subjects, but it is also complemented by playful activity, both indoors and outdoors. We do this so that our students retain more of the information taught during the school day. Time away from the classroom specifically, can offer valuable learning opportunities. As private school educators, we must focus both on academic curriculum, while being prepared to foster an environment where children can express individualism. We make it our priority to ensure that each student is happy and excited to learn and come to school each day!  With the beautiful weather, it is a perfect opportunity to teach new competencies like teamwork and collaboration outdoors. Thank you to our coaches for always supporting our athletes, and to all teachers who strive for excellence in all subjects each day!

Teachers Having Fun Making Videos on a PD day at RMS

Last Friday was a PD Day at the RMS campuses, and it was a busy day for teachers and staff who engaged in a full day of learning and lots of fun! Not only were teachers asked to participate in workshops on how to write clearer report cards for parents, but they were also provided time to improve their classroom management techniques and given an opportunity to practice hands-on skills by creating short films with WeVideo. It was clear to teachers that utilizing new in-classroom technology best practices can improve the learning experience.  Click here to check out one of our favourite teacher created short videos on the RMS YouTube Channel!

How Big is a Foot?

Relating real-life situations to mathematics is crucial, not only to the solidification of math concepts, but also in trying to make math more fun. Throughout the school year, we teachers are always creating and implementing unique and hands-on ways to teach. We can not only make math fun, but also electrifying and exciting!

One such example is relating the story “How Big is a Foot?” by Rolf Myller to the topic of measurement. The story is about a king who wants to have a bed made for his queen as a birthday present, but beds had not yet been invented. The carpenter and his apprentice, not having seen a bed before, were not sure of how big a bed should be. They asked the king, who decided to measure the queen’s height and width using the size of his foot. The queen’s measurements were then passed on to the carpenter and his apprentice who concluded that the bed must measure 3 feet wide and 6 feet long (including the crown, which she sometimes liked to wear while sleeping).

Measuring our classmates
Measuring our classmates

It turned out that the bed they made was much too small for the queen. The story poses the question, “Why was the bed too small for the queen?” We discussed this question in class and have the students use critical-thinking skills to solve this problem, which they did of course.

How big is our classroom door?
How big is our classroom door?
How big is the hallway?
How big is the hallway?

Once the story was finished, the students broke into groups, traced their own feet on to paper, and cut them out. They would use their foot as a measurement tool to measure certain objects and areas around the school, such as desks, hallways, the interactive white board, or even themselves! At the end of the class, we came back to discuss and compare the lengths and widths of various items while thinking about how students may have different or similar measurements. Reading and discussing “How Big is a Foot?” was a great way to introduce the concept of measurement!

Together, WE Achieve More

Twenty years ago, the idea of “We” started out as one 12-year-old’s dream to help liberate children and families from poverty and exploitation. Today, it is a worldwide movement that unifies people with a mission to change the world.

In September, students and staff at RMS were honoured with a visit from Maasai warriors and WE Ambassadors, Wilson and Jackson. Only a handful of schools were offered the chance to meet these charismatic men; because of all the fundraising RMS does every year, we were on this very short list of special schools.

The Maasai warriors and WE ambassadors
The Maasai warriors and WE ambassadors

They spoke about growing up in the Maasai Mara region of Kenya, the last of a generation of fully trained Maasai warriors – and the first to embrace modern teachings and ways of life. Their childhood stories were truly inspiring for our students, especially because our sponsored WE community is in Kenya:

“It was inspirational to hear about their families and all the trials they had to go through to become a warrior.”

Inspirational words of wisdom

“We should be thankful for what we have because people in other countries aren’t as fortunate as we are.”

“It was heartwarming, and it reminded me to respect everyone and what we have here in Canada.”

Part of what made this visit so exciting for our students was knowing that they would see Wilson and Jackson again – at WE Day! In October, 20,000 young leaders and change-makers descended upon the Air Canada Centre for WE Day. RMS has had the honour of attending this event for the last three years, and this year was no different. It was a day of inspiration, empowerment, and togetherness.

13 young representatives of RMS

A group of 13 young leaders from RMS were invited to attend this life-changing event. For many, this was their first time at such an event. The energy was infectious – especially from our seats right beside the stage. The audience was enthralled by speakers such as Margaret Trudeau telling about her battle with mental illness and Mike Downie sharing his brother Gord’s pursuit for reconciliation. Macklemore’s powerful performance of “Drug Dealer”, about his battle with prescription drugs, and Pearl Wenjack’s Ojibway prayer for her lost brother moved the crowd deeply.

Taking in all the inspirational artists at the WE event

All the positive energy and voices for change fueled our first WE Act fundraiser of the year – the Halloween Dance-a-thon. Our WE Act group, which includes dedicated students from grades 5-8, planned not one but three Dance-a-thon events. The senior students had their evening dance on Oct 27, while the junior students danced their hearts out on Halloween, all in the name of health care for our sponsored community, Kipsongol. Our donations will go towards funding vaccination clinics, wellness centres and healthy living outreach programs.

For such a small community here at RMS, we have very big hearts. We have raised a total of $3,565 toward our overall goal for the year of $10,000! Keep up the great work, Rowntree!

WE REMEMBER

Remembrance Day is a day of reflection and respect. As a school, we came together and showed our unity in a moving assembly today. From different points of view and beliefs, Rowntree students and staff shared their thoughts on Remembrance Day and the Moment of Silence. We all had our own way of showing our appreciation of the brave men and women who risked their lives and left their families and friends to fight for Canada and to make the world a better place. We thank those who fought for our freedom, and we know that our lives and our country would not be the same without their sacrifices. Thank you.
