Developing a love of learning

Rowntree Montessori Schools’ goal is to develop a lifelong love of learning and unlock the potential in every student that walks through our doors. Many activities combine academic and social skills development. The students will be prepared for the academic-based Rowntree Montessori Schools Grade 1 programme.

The Rowntree Montessori Schools Prep-ONE Programme is a unique distinctive ethos, to challenge, nurture and develop the skills of 5-year-olds, to reach their full potential. It takes place in an innovative environment where students make an effective transition to the more traditional learning environments found in our Grade 1 to 8 elementary programmes. In addition, the programme will provide the student with the needed skills and a head start for a successful completion of Grade 1. Our Prep-ONE class develops a well-rounded student who is prepared for the RMS Grade 1 programme, and enhances the skills needed to gain the most success.

This programme includes:

Improvement of social skills, cooperation through group work

Increase of self-esteem, and development of responsibility and independence

Development of reading and writing through phonics

Development of mathematics concepts including addition and subtraction, time telling, understanding of money and measurement

Development of sportsmanship, team work, physical fitness, as well as creativity through arts, crafts and music

A richness of many opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, that provides personal challenge, teamwork and the discovery of new skills.

Dash and Dots robots in SK

In our Prep-ONE (SK) class, students start using the Dash and Dot robots. The students learn how to control the robots, Dash and Dot, using various apps on the tablet and puzzlet. These robots help teach our students the basics of coding. By introducing coding through robotics, we work to inspire our students to explore the exciting world of engineering and technology. The interactive whiteboard in our classroom has turned our typical classroom into a fun learning environment. The implementation of these technologies definitely enhances the way our students are learning various concepts. Prep-ONE students also enjoy exploring various educational games and activities on the Chromebooks. Some of the coding games include lightbot and botlogic educational puzzle games that challenge students to tackle complex logic problems while teaching valuable coding concepts. Using simple commands (and eventually code), students program their bots to navigate through progressively challenging mazes.

Language Studies in Prep-ONE

A Prep-ONE student reading during Language Studies

At RMS, every day, the Prep-ONE students have language studies. Throughout the week they learn reading and writing, oral communication and media literacy. Our Prep-ONE students can be seen reading short sentences in their Phonics books. Our teachers focus on the importance of learning to read whole words, as well as identifying individual letters. Each week, the students have the opportunity to sit in the “Author’s Chair” where they read aloud their practiced book to their classmates. The children beam with pride as they share their accomplishments with the rest of their class.

Honouring Black History Month at RMS

Every February, students in Canada are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of Black Canadians and their communities. Black History Month is an important tradition at Rowntree Montessori Schools (RMS).

Black History Month is a time to reflect, honour, and celebrate the achievements of African American and Black Canadian citizens. At RMS, Black History Month is dedicated to instilling in our students the importance of recognizing the accomplishments of famous African American and Black Canadian individuals.

Recently, our Mayfield Prep-One (SK) students learned about Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks was an African American civil rights activist whose refusal to relinquish her seat on a public bus to a white man precipitated the 1955–56 Montgomery Bus Boycott in Alabama, which is recognized as the spark that ignited the U.S. civil rights movement.

The Prep-One students read Rosa’s Bus; a book about Rosa Park’s journey on Bus #2857. Bus #2857 was an ordinary public bus until a woman named Rosa Parks, who had just finished her work day as a seamstress, refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. This event sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a key event in the Civil Rights Movement led by Martin Luther King, Jr.

After reading about this important historical event, our Prep-One students had an opportunity to re-enact the Rosa Parks Bus Protest and had a chance to present their re-enactments to their classmates. Please watch this wonderful re-enactment by one of our Mayfield Prep-One students.

Remembering Rosa Parks

This lesson allows the children to contextually experience what it is like to stand up for what is right and give them a chance to talk about things that are right and wrong. During this lesson, students learned about civil rights speeches, marches, and protests. This was a great lesson that included history and literature, character and values education, as well as public speaking skills.

Science is fun at Rowntree Montessori Schools!

Teaching the systems of the human body can be a lot of fun. Watching our PrepONE (SK) students become more aware of their bodies and engaged in how it works was an enriching experience. Our Science in PrepOne students were amazed to learn how the blood gets around the body. Blood consists of liquid and solid particles. Blood is a mixture of two components: the liquid portion, called plasma, and the three cellular portions; white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Each ingredient in our blood does a special job.

The Experiment

To take a closer look at blood and how it works, we created a Blood Model. We used liquid soap for plasma, small marshmallows for the white blood cells, cinnamon candies for the red blood cells, and sparkles for platelets. Each component of the blood was reviewed as we added the ingredient into our glass jar. The students loved the experiment and had fun learning about the circulatory system.

This hands-on learning PrepOne experience has nurtured our students’ intellectual curiosity. Students acquired new ways of asking questions and understanding how the circulatory system works closely with other systems in our bodies to keep us alive.

The Benefits of using Montessori Materials to Teach Math

Recently in our PrepOne Math class, we have been using our workbooks a lot lately. So to try something new for our unit on creating 3D shapes, we implemented a hands-on STEM activity that helped students learn this skill. This teaching method is especially helpful to students who are kinesthetic or tactile learners. It provides them with a better understanding of the points and sides of each shape. Savera, has always done well in Math and she really loves to take part in any hands-on Montessori activities. During this lesson, she created 3D shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks and was able to identify each shape with its points and sides.

Rowntree’s mission is to use differentiated learning to teach our students various concepts and core skills. With this particular activity, students really benefited from the lesson because they were actively involved in joining sides and points of the 3D shape and were able to actively see the shapes come to life.

As today’s teachers, it is our responsibility to identify the various ways our students learn and encourage learning through different methods.
Savera was really excited as this was the first 3D shape she had created independently, without any assistance from her teacher.

Learning the Fundamentals of Coding in PrepOne (SK) at Rowntree Montessori Schools

If you are looking for a better education for your child, consider Rowntree Montessori Schools (RMS). One of the areas of focus that students at RMS excel at is robotics. Students love designing and controlling robots, which allows them to sharpen their motor skills and think creatively from a young age. In robotics, students can engage with other students socially, working and communicating together as a team. It also prepares students for the increasing use of artificial intelligence and promotes teamwork and collaboration. Our coding and robotics activities often involve the use of Dash and Dot robots along with wireless tablets. Cross-Curricular Teaching and Learning in a Prep-ONE class

Our AHA! Moments take place in our classrooms, every day!

This past week, during a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activity, our Prep-ONE students learned how to create 2D shapes using straws, Popsicle sticks, connectors, paper, scissors and magnetic shapes. Building strong engineering and math skills is important at Rowntree Montessori Schools because we believe that such STEM skills will help prepare our students for the future. However, we also believe that building students’ character is equally important. Teaching our students skills, such as working together in small groups, problem-solving, team work and leadership are all essential character traits. This lesson provided an opportunity for our Prep-ONE students to practice their math, science and engineering skills, as well as their collaborative and problem-solving skills.

Learning How to Help in Kindergarten

The story “How Full is your Bucket?” by Tom Roth is a great story to discuss the importance of how positive and negative words, and actions can affect the mental health of others. In Prep-ONE (Senior Kindergarten), we introduced the story after many discussions on equality and inclusion during our Black History Month unit, to further extend the conversation and discuss the importance of our actions and their impact on others.

How Full is Your Bucket by Tom Roth

After reading How Full is Your Bucket, we had a long class discussion about our actions and what we can do to make our friends, family and peers have full buckets. Students talked about making a conscious effort to be kind to others. Below are some of the thoughts and ideas the students talked about during our class discussion on bucket filling:

Student 1: We should smile at our friends.

Student 2: Sharing toys with my sister makes her happy.

Student 3: When my friend can’t read a word, I can help them.

Student 4: I help my mom and dad grocery shop.

Student 5: Saying nice words to our friends will fill their buckets.

Student 6: If someone is not nice, we can be nice to them.

Student 7: When we are filling buckets, we feel happy.

Filling Your Bucket in Kindergarten Montessori

During this class, students realized that our buckets are full when we are kind to one another, and that they are empty when we are rude or mean to others. Children in Prep-ONE learned strategies to lift one another, instead of bringing each other down through literature. Reading is a fantastic tool to help students understand concepts such as positivity and mental well-being. We encourage every parent to spend time using books as a way to help develop valuable learning lessons.

Science in Kindergarten

Children start to become more aware of the functions of the human body in Kindergarten and learn this with Science in Kindergarten. At Rowntree Montessori Schools, Prep-ONE (SK) students are taught about four systems of the human body in science class: the nervous system, the digestive system, the respiratory system and the circulatory system. Our Prep-ONE students recently learned that these four systems not only work really well on their own, but work well together. The students were introduced to many new functions of the body over the course of a month, as they learned through various hands on activities, videos, class discussion, and by using Montessori charts, diagrams and the interactive whiteboards.

Our students thoroughly enjoyed learning about these systems of the human body. When learning about the circulatory system, students were introduced to white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets and plasma. The video below is a great representation of how excited the students were to explain what they learned during our class discussions on the circulatory system.

As teachers, we were very excited to see our students going home and applying what they learned in class to their daily lives. For example, when one of our Kindergarten students was away sick for the day, she told her mother that her white blood cells were working really hard to fight her bad bacteria. She explained to her Mom that when they did, she would feel well enough to return back to school. When teaching about topics such as the human body, we want to ensure that students enjoy what they are learning. Making science exciting through hands-on projects, helps ensure that students stay engaged and retain what they learn. After learning about the human body, after a full month, our Kindergarten students still frequently discussed what they learned and how much they loved learning about their bodies.
