Teaching the systems of the human body can be a lot of fun. Watching our PrepOne (SK) students become more aware of their bodies and engaged in how it works was an enriching experience. Our students were amazed to learn how the blood gets around the body and that it is consists of liquid and solid particles. They were fascinated to learn that our blood is a mixture of two components: the liquid portion of the blood is called plasma and the three cellular portions of the blood are called white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Additionally, each ingredient in our blood does a special job.
To take a closer look at blood and how it works, we created a Blood Model. We used liquid soap for plasma, small marshmallows for the white blood cells, cinnamon candies for the red blood cells, and sparkles for platelets. We discussed each component of the blood as we added each ingredient in our glass jar. The students loved the experiment and had fun learning about the circulatory system.
This hands-on learning experience has nurtured our students’ intellectual curiosity. It has also helped them acquire new ways of asking questions and understanding how the circulatory system works closely with other systems in our bodies to keep us alive.
