Developing a love of learning

Rowntree Montessori Schools’ goal is to develop a lifelong love of learning and unlock the potential in every student that walks through our doors. Many activities combine academic and social skills development. The students will be prepared for the academic-based Rowntree Montessori Schools Grade 1 programme.

The Rowntree Montessori Schools Prep-ONE Programme is a unique distinctive ethos, to challenge, nurture and develop the skills of 5-year-olds, to reach their full potential. It takes place in an innovative environment where students make an effective transition to the more traditional learning environments found in our Grade 1 to 8 elementary programmes. In addition, the programme will provide the student with the needed skills and a head start for a successful completion of Grade 1. Our Prep-ONE class develops a well-rounded student who is prepared for the RMS Grade 1 programme, and enhances the skills needed to gain the most success.

This programme includes:

Improvement of social skills, cooperation through group work

Increase of self-esteem, and development of responsibility and independence

Development of reading and writing through phonics

Development of mathematics concepts including addition and subtraction, time telling, understanding of money and measurement

Development of sportsmanship, team work, physical fitness, as well as creativity through arts, crafts and music

A richness of many opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, that provides personal challenge, teamwork and the discovery of new skills.

A Great Week in the History of Education

When I was a young teacher, I had an ongoing joke with a colleague in which we would occasionally, especially when things got a bit hectic, walk into each other’s classrooms and exclaim, “It’s another great day in the history of education!” As I have gotten older, now well over 20 years into my career, I continue to be reminded of how lucky I have been to work as an educator.

These last few months, though unprecedentedly difficult and stressful, have reinforced to me that every day, in fact, is a great day in education. With the world in turmoil over an ongoing pandemic and a contested election South of our border, the work of teaching and learning just rolls on and on. At Rowntree, through the period of physical closure from March to June and through our concurrent model since September, we have all been so thoroughly engrossed with doing whatever we can to keep the school moving forward, that the challenges in the wider world don’t seem as daunting. Our oldest students, especially, have been captivated by our society’s recent focus on racial injustice, and our classrooms are regularly filled with discussion and action about solving real-world “wicked problems” through our STEM programme.

However, despite any challenges or chaos that may appear beyond our classroom walls, there is something fundamentally good and grounding about a child designing a ‘spacecraft’ to protect a falling egg from breaking, or leafing through the pages of a new dictionary, or solving a very difficult Math problem. Last week wasn’t “election week” for our students, and the rising COVID numbers and changing public health restrictions in the community were not our focus. It was just another week in their Rowntree education, and it was a great one! Want to see exactly how we do this? Nominated Best Private School for Ninth Consecutive Year!

Why choose RMS: A Mother’s Perspective

How does a parent ever know that they have made the right choice when making difficult decisions for their child, such as where to send them to school for Kindergarten?

Every day when my 4.5-year-old son comes home from Rowntree Montessori School (RMS), I can see the wonder and excitement on his face and in his discussions at the dinner table. “Mommy, do you know what Black History Month is?!” “Mama, I spelled my name!” “Mom, I counted 100 beads today!” With each passing day, I continue to be amazed at his growth and development not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. I truly believe that it is his exposure to the Kindergarten Montessori programme that has helped him to develop into an intelligent, caring, compassionate, and curious little boy. Each of the skills he learns at school is evident in our home-life as well.

Using Montessori Materials

At school, he is exposed to sensorial Montessori materials, such as pouring, scooping, and lacing, all of which have helped develop his fine-motor and self-help skills. This hands-on approach to learning aids him in being able to master tasks such as dressing himself, precision with pouring, and even printing. The Rowntree Montessori approach to learning has really helped to develop his independence in completing his school-work and in self-care. He also uses various Montessori materials to aid in his understanding of mathematics and language. With Kindergarten expectations set higher than the Ministry of Education, students benefit from the use of apparatuses such as the Spindle boxes and the Addition Strip Board. These strengthen his understanding of concepts, such as numeration and addition. Watching my 4.5-year-old son complete addition questions of sums over 10 is just one example of the reassurance I am given in my choice to have him attend Rowntree Montessori Schools.

I will never forget the evening my son came home with a list of spelling words to work on for homework. I was surprised to see that my little boy could not only identify the phonetic sound of each letter but could read each list word! The RMS Kindergarten Montessori programme focuses on the importance of reading and writing right from the beginning. Students are taught to correctly print letters, with the use of the Montessori Sandpaper Letters. The importance of reading is also evident through their Reading program where students are given a weekly reader to practice. In just a few short months I was amazed to see that my son has advanced so remarkably in his language and reading skills. At such a young age, I can already see the early signs in my son of a strong reader!

One of the most notable areas of growth I have witnessed in my son since he began the RMS Kindergarten Montessori programme in September is in his character building. His participation in class has helped him to build healthy peer-relationships. He has become more respectful, caring and responsible. All of these traits are evident in his home-life, particularly in the way he interacts with his siblings at home, with extended family and to people in our community. He shows compassion and understanding to his younger sister and models the importance of using manners, sharing and being kind to others.

The enriched curriculum that he is being taught at school has given him every opportunity to reach his highest potential. The curriculum being taught is current, cross-curricular, and challenging. Classroom sizes are smaller and allow for more one-on-one attention with each student. I am confident that my child receives the individualized attention that he requires to succeed at school. As a parent, we all want to ensure that we provide our children with the very best, and what better place to start than at the Top Choice Award-winning school, Rowntree Montessori Schools.

Learning about Trees in PrepOne Science

Science is an important subject for students at Rowntree Montessori Schools, starting in our younger grades, like PrepOne (SK). Our curriculum ties real-life lessons into our teaching. Recently, our PrepOne students learned that trees are an important part of our world.

Trees provide wood for building and pulp for making paper. Trees provide habitats for all sorts of insects, birds and other animals. Many types of fruits and nuts come from trees — including apples, oranges, walnuts, pears and peaches. Even the sap of trees is useful as food for insects and for making maple syrup — yum! Science in PrepOne can be so much fun!

In this Science lesson, our PrepOne students learned about the different parts of a tree, including the roots and root system. The roots are the part of the tree that grows underground.

Trees also have a crown. The crown shades the roots, collects energy from the sun (photosynthesis) and allows the tree to remove extra water to keep it cool. The crowns of trees come in many shapes and sizes!

Another important part of the tree is its branches. The branches provide the support to distribute the leaves efficiently for the type of tree and the environment. They also serve as conduits for water and nutrients and as storage for extra sugar.

The last big part of a tree is its trunk. The trunk of the tree provides its shape and support and holds up the crown. The trunk transports water and nutrients from the soil and sugar from the leaves.

We made this lesson fun by having our PrepOne students colour the different parts of the tree. For a similar activity that you can do while out for a walk, visit Forests Ontario’s website.

Learning About Values while Learning Remotely

One of the many skills our students learn at Rowntree Montessori Schools (RMS) is grit and we have truly put this skill to test in the past six weeks. Grit has helped our students adapt to our Remote Learning Programme. RMS’ award-winning, structured academic programme includes a focus on character building and core values. Grit is one of the many values that we encourage our students to display.

Our dedicated and committed teachers have really stepped up to the challenge and helped us implement a robust Remote Academic learning programme. However, it’s truly our students who upped their game with their remote learning skills. And they have done so while displaying kindness, thoughtfulness, and care. This video of the past week’s learning can really attest to that.

Shakespearean Sonnets in Grade 8

What Do Grade 8 Students Do When Their School is Closed Because of a Pandemic? At RMS, they learn how to write a Shakespearean sonnet.

Well, if they happen to be Rowntree Montessori School Students, and their school is physically closed, they write Shakespearean sonnets and recite them for their classmates. Shakespeare, and sonnets are an important part of the English curriculum at Rowntree Montessori Schools.

After reading (and watching) several examples of sonnets written by William Shakespeare, the Grade 8s created their own 14-line Shakespearean sonnet. Each line needed to be precisely ten syllables, and the poem needed to follow the rhyme scheme (ABAB CDCD EFEF GG). Our students put together a wonderful video montage of some of their Shakespearean sonnets.

Some Tips for Helping Your Kids Learn at Home During COVID-19

Reach Out To Your Child’s Teacher (s)

Ask the teacher fort their suggestions on how best to follow the lesson schedule and plan for the day
Teachers can also give you tips on how to effectively facilitate your child’s learning
Talk to your friends and see what is working best for their children and try to incorporate some of these practices.

Set Up a Dedicated Workspace for your Child

Make sure that your child has a desk or table where they work quietly and uninterrupted, with little-to-no distraction. Ensure that the desk area is tidy and bright, if possible.
Turn off televisions and make sure that devices and phones are put away
Have a laptop or desktop computer set up for your child, with a hard-wired internet connection
Ensure that your child has schools supplies handy, including pencils, erasers, pens, calculator etc.

Plan The Day With Your Child

Even if you’re following a lesson plan, it’s good to brainstorm with your child about their day ahead
Provide them with options. Ask them what how they feel about doing things in certain ways. Be sure to give them time to adjust to the new routine and schedule.

Involve the Family

Remote learning involves integrating your child’s educational schedule with your family’s regular routine.
Have a chat with your family and know what their expectations are with the remote learning setup- and what is expected of them.

Be Flexible

Learning from home can be challenging, new and frustrating at times.
Facilitate your child’s study schedule closely, but be flexible to change it up based on your child’s learning tendencies and emotional state at the time.

Use Free Resources

Your child’s schools will provide lessons, but you can also make use of other resources like worksheets that are available online to support or expand upon your child’s lesson.

Enjoy the Time with your Children

We all know that this is an unprecedented and challenging time. But try to make the most of the extra time that you have together as a family.
Create memories with your children. Take advantage of the extra time and play some board games, create crafts, go through old family photo albums and pictures, or work in the backyard together.
Your children will remember this time when they are older so try to create some positive memories about how your family coped.
