According to S. Kert of educationaltechnology.net educational technology (ed-tech) is “a field of study that investigates the process of analyzing, designing, developing, implementing and evaluating the instructional environment and learning materials in order to improve teaching and learning. The overall purpose of ed-tech is to improve education.” At Rowntree Montessori Schools, ed-tech can be seen in our 21st-century classrooms when students are learning from the use of large interactive Epson projector whiteboards, to the use of desktop computers and Google Chromebooks, plus a variety of tools such as tablets and Dash and Dot robots with all of the accessories. For example, Dash allows students to learn about how to use block coding to control their robots.
We at RMS understand the need to ensure that students are prepared for jobs of the future, and so robotics is taught form Pre-Kindergarten Montessori onwards. Robotics is also taught in the computer lab, where students not only work on research, projects and typing practice, but they also take coding lessons. Our coding and technology teachers certainly see the benefit of this type of technology in the classroom, when students are able to problem-solve and complete coding challenges in their first year of joining RMS.
The impact that ed-tech has on a lesson taught to a student is significant. When students are exploring games and applications on the tablets, it allows them to learn at their own pace. Children can play learning games according to their own abilities, and enjoy learning because technology in the classroom tends to be engaging. With the right combination of technology in the classroom, students can now access information instantly, be inspired for their next art project, or research solutions to real-life problems. Here at Rowntree Montessori Schools, we encourage 21st-century thinkers and learners, and continue to invest in technology to support our students.
