The Show Must Go On! International Day Goes Online
Each year, Rowntree Montessori Schools celebrates International Day, where a wide range of cultures and traditions are shared. This year International Day went online!
RMS is a very multicultural environment and truly mirrors the world that we live in. At our school, we are accepting of everyone and strive to build a community of inclusivity, awareness, and respect. All year long, and especially in April when we run our International Day, we celebrate our wide range of heritages. Students are encouraged to dress in traditional clothing and, in the past, contribute a food dish that best represents their family in our large international potluck. This is truly an exciting opportunity for the entire school to come together to celebrate our multiculturalism.
This year, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we held our first-ever, Online International Day and Grandparents Day, where our students, their families, and all members of the Rowntree community were encouraged to wear clothing specific to their cultures. Everyone was also encouraged to have snacks and/or lunch specific to their cultures. RMS students were encouraged to connect with their grandparents or special relatives, keeping social distancing in mind and using technology to call or video conference with their relatives.
All of our students participated in a special Grandparents Day themed activity or lesson where our students celebrated and appreciated their elders. Mrs C’s Grade 4 class wrote some heartfelt poems and compiled their favourite photos of their grandparents and put together a beautiful video for us to watch.
During these long days of self-isolation and social distancing, it’s important to reach out and check in on your loved ones. It provides a sense of comfort and eases stress and anxiety. We are fortunate to have technology to help us do this safely.
