Sign up for Summer Learning Camps 2017

Come in and sign up for our Summer Learning Camps for this upcoming July 3rd to August 25th, 2017! We offer Kindergarten Montessori Readiness (children turning 4 in 2017), Prep-One Readiness (children turning 5 in 2017), Grade 1 Readiness (children turning 6 years old in September 2016), a Grade 2-5 Enrichment and Remedial Educational Programme, a NEW Grade 6-8 Technology Camp, and a Grade 6-8 Math/English Enrichment and Remedial Programme. Our summer programmes are specially designed to allow students to continue school throughout the summer months and to get a head start for the upcoming year, while enjoying fun and exciting activities and outings. Students will have the opportunity to have the best of both worlds by participating in a learning programme for the morning session, and then take part in planned activities in the afternoon, with a scheduled weekly field trip. All activities will coincide with a planned weekly theme. Parents will be given a calendar outlining the weekly events scheduled throughout the summer.

Math Made Fun

Many schools teach Math primarily through numbers and textbook work. However, we believe that as times change, so should teaching methods. Today is Math day at RMS! It is a fun and exciting day for all ages, and allows us to provide a meaningful educational experience, that offers students the ability to engage in multiple hands-on activities using measuring tapes, counting objects and graphing tools. Our students are very engaged and glad to have the opportunity to use the many different math resources that we setup in the classrooms and around the school! They work as a team to successfully solve each problem they are given, while having a blast learning!

Today the students completed over 10 activities throughout various stations setup around the school. They had the opportunity to attend a toy and book store where they used play money to purchase items, teaching them about currency, addition and subtraction. They also completed math trivia, multiple math games which included a fun physical fitness element in the gymnasium, and learned how to calculate real estate agent commission when purchasing a new home – among many other activities. These activities allow students to understand how math is not just a subject we teach, but a life skill that plays a vital role outside of the classroom, helping prepare them to solve everyday obstacles they may encounter.

Our elementary students study math at one grade level ahead (for example Grade 2 students study Grade 3 math). This keeps our student challenged by introducing new concepts and procedures in a timely manner. Our students are often asked to prepare and present solutions to their math challenges. For example, today we had junior students presenting their Real Estate projects to other students and teachers, explaining the sale price between agent and buyer, making sure to explain how commission rates are calculated.

Our students were thrilled with their experiences on Math Day and will now engage in learning new math concepts from a different perspective – one that is both educational and fun!

Building Character for the Future

Children require and deserve a well-rounded education. We believe that a warm, loving, safe and welcoming school is the foundation for great academic and personal achievement and growth. We offer each child who walks through our school doors a chance to grow and develop into a well-rounded and loving individual – one who will excel in challenges that he or she undertakes and experience great personal as well as academic growth throughout their time at RMS. With a focus on each individual student’s potential, we allow each child to explore, interact and collaborate with classmates for greater learning opportunities.

Children in our Kindergarten Montessori programme (Junior Kindergarten) are encouraged from a young age to express and develop their creativity. They are introduced to and guided towards mastering concepts in math, science, geography, language arts, music, art and French daily. Each student is accustomed to the routines and demands of school in the coming years. They are taught how to socialize, collaborate with other children, and how to be a good citizen. We encourage each student to achieve his or her goals, and guide each child in the right direction, doing so with positive reinforcement and praise. Building a strong foundation and exceptional character is fundamental to us all! Attending school and adjusting to life away from home are a part of each child’s healthy development. Thanks to our unique approach to teaching, our students are eager to join their supportive classmates and teachers and excited to learn more each day!

Teachers Having Fun Making Videos on a PD day at RMS

Last Friday was a PD Day at the RMS campuses, and it was a busy day for teachers and staff who engaged in a full day of learning and lots of fun! Not only were teachers asked to participate in workshops on how to write clearer report cards for parents, but they were also provided time to improve their classroom management techniques and given an opportunity to practice hands-on skills by creating short films with WeVideo. It was clear to teachers that utilizing new in-classroom technology best practices can improve the learning experience. Rowntree Welcomes DASH & DOT!

Our Kindergarten and Prep-ONE students recently had the wonderful opportunity of being introduced to Dash & Dot robots. Dash & Dot are educational toy robots that make learning to code fun for young children. Used together with tablets, these robots can be easily programmed to complete a variety of tasks, all while teaching children the basics of programming. Over the course of several mornings, workshops were held in our kindergarten and lower grade classes to introduce students these wonderful little robots, while giving them the opportunity to participate in many hands-on activities.

Here at the Academy, I had the privilege of being present for two of these workshops and got to see firsthand just how engaging, fun, and versatile these little robots are. The student’s eyes gleamed with excitement as they worked together to make Dash & Dot light up with different colours, move in specific ways, play sounds, and even play songs that the students created! Using a simple drag-and-drop interface on the tablet, students created programs using coding basics like sequencing and loops to control the robots and had a great deal of fun while doing it.

As educators, we are constantly striving to prepare our students with 21^st century learning skills, and programming is just one of the many ways that we can do just that! By teaching students coding concepts from an early age, we are instilling in them a curiosity and ability to problem solve and innovate that will carry them through the rest of their lives. Many people may be skeptical about teaching Kindergarten students to code and program, but watching them work together and solve problems during these workshops only proves that with the right tools, not only is it possible for these students to do it, but it is very likely they will excel at it, all while learning and having fun!

Our Dash & Dot experiences were such a success that we recently purchased many more robots to teach these important programming principles. They will also be frequently utilized within other subject areas and across multiple age groups, to ensure our kids have the best possible hands-on learning experience from a young age . We could not be more excited.
