“Celebrating Black History”

The month of February is a significant month, as it is a time to reflect, honour, and celebrate the achievements of African American and Black Canadian citizens. It is encouraging to see that this event is gaining international recognition and is being celebrated all over the world.

At RMS, the month of February is dedicated to instilling in our students the importance of recognizing the accomplishments of famous African American and Black Canadian individuals.

Each class is assigned a specific topic of research and presentation. Students have the opportunity to pick one famous African American or Black Canadian of their choice to research. Each grade has a different theme such as: Sports, Music, Government, Science, Engineering, or the Arts. The purpose of this exercise is not just to celebrate the heritage, but also to educate our future generation on the remarkable contributions made by African American and Black Canadian populations during the past and present. Our students gain valuable knowledge and insight into some historic personalities of Black heritage and take great pride in presenting their findings to their classmates.

As with any oral presentation of this sort, it is the perfect opportunity for students to increase their confidence and to enhance their public-speaking skills.

The celebration of Black History teaches our generation the value of hard work, determination, and courage, all of which are invaluable qualities which will mould our generation to bring about meaningful change for a new and better tomorrow.

The Importance of French and “Le Carnaval de Rowntree”

Canada is one of only a handful of officially bi-lingual countries in the world. As a result, French education plays a very important role in preparing students for successful careers. Not only do we teach French at all levels at Rowntree, starting from Kindergarten Montessori to the higher grades, but we also expose our students to varied activities where they get to explore the value of learning French, and master the skills in each of the four interconnected strands: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

“While the knowledge of any language has value, French is not only a global language but the mother tongue of many Canadians and an integral part of the Canadian identity.” This essentially summarizes the many benefits of learning French as a second language. The transmission of the Francophone culture and identity is also an integral part of our entire curriculum.

Further to this, our French Department has been busy preparing for a French Carnival, “Le Carnaval de Rowntree.” We actually scheduled this to coincide with the carnival “Carnaval du Québec” held at the end of January in the province of Québec, and lasting for 2 weeks. Our “Le Carnaval de Rowntree” is taking place in the last week of January. Both students and French teachers are very excited about this first carnival, where numerous French activities have been planned! Throughout the “Le Carnaval de Rowntree”, students are scheduled at different stations of the carnival, ranging from crafts to café’s. The main goal for all these numerous activities is to bring awareness of the French culture and to gain knowledge of the many words and expressions students have learned. We are also excited and eager to announce the name of our special guest! Stay tuned for more information about the success of the “Le Carnaval de Rowntree”!

A taste of the Québec Carnival coming to RMS’ “Carnaval Français de Rowntree”

Did you know……….

One of the best ways to help your child enjoy studying French is to participate in an event associated with the French language!

Québec City has been hosting an annual winter event, the “Carnival de Québec”, every winter for over a century. This very popular event draws a crowd of about one million people to celebrate the Carnival. It is a grandiose celebration which goes on for 17 days and is known to be the biggest winter celebration in the world! The mascot of the festive season is an immense snowman called Le Bonhomme de Neige. This life-size snowman always wears a red toque, white snow suit with black buttons, and an arrow sash. Le Bonhomme de Neige lives in a huge ice palace built of ice and snow which is a popular attraction amongst the carnival’s visitors.

Carnaval Quebec Attractions — Carnaval Québec Attractions

It has been over a century since the launch of the carnival in Québec City, and it is a great opportunity for English speaking families to spend time with their children and to immerse themselves in the world of French language and French culture! The 17 day event consists of over 200 activities and caters to both the young and the young at heart! Snow Sculpture Competitions and Ice Canoe Races are some of the fun activities at the Carnaval de Québec.

Of course, any celebration would be incomplete without great gastronomy. Do you love Beaver Tails sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon? Or maybe colourful cotton candy? The delectable cuisine available at the carnival is sure to please every taste bud.

In 2016, the Carnaval de Québec will be held from January the 29^th to February 14th.

Inspired by this fun-filled event in Québec City, Rowntree Montessori Schools has also lined up a Carnival of its own in the month of January, including its own “Bonhomme de Neige” and many fun French related activities. Stay tuned for more details about the “Carnaval de Rowntree”!

Online Tools for Learning French as a Second Language

French as a second language is becoming increasingly important in the business world. Students who are being exposed to the language have more advantages than students who have not been exposed at an early age.

There are many tools to help students, and parents, to learn this popular language. At the beginning of the year, students were given a list of websites to help them with French phonics, pronunciation as well as vocabulary. Many students have taken advantage of these tools and they have been using them regularly. It is encouraging to see how excited they are when they share the experiences they’ve had with the French games and the French phonics videos at home.

It is important that students, who learn French as a second language, use French frequently in their daily activities at home and in school. This will not only help them to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the language, but it will also help them to build their confidence and fluency in using the language.

Making Math Meaningful

During the Fall term last year, Rowntree Montessori Schools’ Academy held its inaugural RMS Math Bowl Competition! Since the beginning of this academic year, students were very excited to take part in this contest, which consisted of two written in-class tests and a final group quiz. Every member of the class could participate in both of the written test qualifying rounds, which led up to the final quiz. This final phase of the Math Bowl was comprised of the top ten students from each class.

On the final competition day, the emcee for the quiz read out each question, which was also displayed for both teams. The excited and enthusiastic students worked with their teams to solve the problems and find solutions before their opponents could do the same. Each team sat around a table, all huddled together with a bell to ring as soon as they were ready with their answers, the six and seven year olds especially were in a new and dynamic learning situation! It was a unique experience for them as they had never tackled a competition like this before. Some felt challenged, while others breezed through each question, and several can still be heard in the halls of the school saying such things as “I am really good in Math!” At the end, each team congratulated the other and left the Quiz Venue sportingly. “It’s all about having fun with Math and not thinking of it as a tedious and boring subject,” said the two Math Coordinators, adding “the Competition was not only refreshing for all students, but also taught them to persist through problems and come up with diverse ways to solve them.” Our next assembly was also a day full of excitement as certificates were handed out to all participants and trophies awarded to each winning class for them to showcase in their classroom until the end of this academic school year!

The Rowntree Management and “STEM” Vertical Team, who are always seeking opportunities to “Nurture Tomorrow’s Achievers”, arranged this competition in order to enlighten students as well as help them see mathematics as a coherent subject and not just as multiple sets of complicated and unrelated rules. This will later be followed by our RMS’ Math Day in March, where students will have the opportunity to participate in Math Activities with shopping, money and banking facilities!

Welcome to French Class – “Bienvenue à la Classe Française”

At Rowntree Montessori Schools, we realize that exposing students to a second language in their early years, when the brain is like a “super-sponge”, is guaranteed to produce successful results, and in light of that important fact, helping students to build a foundation in French as early as Kindergarten Montessori (Junior Kindergarten) becomes one of our primary goals. By the time our students reach Grade 4, they are well equipped with a sound knowledge of the basic elements of French, making it easier for our students to achieve and exceed the expectations of the Ontario Curriculum.

In Kindergarten Montessori (Junior Kindergarten) and Prep-ONE (Senior Kindergarten), students are encouraged to build basic vocabulary and they are provided with many opportunities to practice their vocabulary both in and outside of the classroom. For example, after having learned the names of fruits and vegetables, the students of Kindergarten Montessori and Prep-ONE were asked to use their knowledge of French, to name the fruits and vegetables in their lunch bags. The objective of this activity was two-fold, as it also paved the way to a discussion in “Healthy Eating”.

In Grade 1, students have fun pretending to be the “Teacher of the Day.” Students are given the chance to prepare a dialogue in French using pre-written questions and answers which are practiced at school and at home, possibly even with an older sibling who may have an advanced knowledge of French.

Evidently, children become more sensitive and fond of the language, when they learn it at a young age. They begin to absorb the words at a rapid pace even when they see or hear it on TV shows, in songs, in commercials, on the road, or in a mall. It is always refreshing to see students attempting to use their oral and listening skills in their daily conversations with family and friends, and to have them share those experiences with us in the classroom! Needless to say, that is simply rewarding to any teacher!

By the end of Grade 2, students present their family tree in French. They also learn simple commands and questions in French. Once the students are fluent in speaking the words which they have learned, French becomes the more favoured language to use in the French classroom, until of course they have exhausted the vocabulary they learned!

In Grade 3, students take pride in presenting their French Autobiography to the class. They also have the opportunity to construct a project of their homes using pictures of their own homes and French labels. This project has become a popular favourite amongst the students as it also serves as a treasured memory of their cozy dwelling.

Our mission to develop well rounded, confident and eloquent FSL students is certainly accomplished through these fun and stimulating activities in the classroom!

Welcome To Kipsongol, Kenya!

At this wonderful time of year, we sometimes forget how fortunate we really are. We are surrounded by loved ones, give gifts to our friends and family, and occasionally over-indulge at the dinner table. But during this festive season, it is also important to think about children in less developed countries, and the difficulties communities have in providing an education for their children. Here at Rowntree, we have made it our mission to help those less fortunate by raising money to help children in Kenya gain the skills and qualifications they need to succeed.

When we began this school year, we were about $1200 away from reaching our goal to build a school house in Kenya. For our second Halloween Dance-A-Thon, we asked for pledges of support, and as usual our wonderful RMS school community delivered! Our fundraising total was over $4700! This means we have surpassed our $10,000 goal, and our school is ready to be built! Way to go, Rowntree!

We have been partnered with Free the Children for just over one year, and in that time we have already raised enough money to build a school. On November 5^th, we received news from Free the Children that our school is to be built in the Kenyan community of Kipsongol. After hearing the news, we looked for information about the people who live in Kipsongol, and we are very excited to be working with this community.

The Kipsongal Community — The Kipsongol Community

Kipsongol is a small rural community of 2000 people, located about 185km from Nairobi. Their economy is based almost exclusively on livestock. In 1996, the parents in the community began the Kipsongol Primary School under a tree in a nearby forest, and then fundraised as a community to acquire land and build eight temporary classrooms. They believe strongly in the power of education and have a renewed hope for their future. Free the Children began working in Kipsongol in 2012 to help convert the 8 temporary school houses into permanent structures. This was a huge undertaking, for the village has over 800 school aged children—there is definitely lots of work to be done!

The reason we have been partnered with Kipsongol is that there is no well in the village. Children must walk over 15 km each way to gather water from the nearest water source – this takes 6-8 hours. It is the responsibility of women and girls to collect the water, so girls can’t attend classes and mothers can’t make sure their kids go to school. Rowntree will be working to build a well, to be located next to our new schoolhouse. This will allow more children to attend school, and return to their homes with clean water.

Spend a Little Time, Spread a Little Love …….RMS Gives Back!

“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.”

The students from our Grade 1 and Prep-ONE (Senior Kindergarten) classes at our Downtown Campus were recently afforded a treasured opportunity to reach out and give back to their community. The students of Rowntree Montessori Schools were invited to share their vocal and musical talent with various organizations at a community outreach breakfast. This event was held to promote a new immigration website. The YMCA, Region of Peel, Access Employment, Humber Employment Center for Training and Education, and the Brampton Multicultural Council were some of the organizations that came out to support this great cause. The students at the Downtown Campus proudly showcased their musical talent with a rendition of “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” on their recorders as well as an upbeat dance routine backed by a strong choir singing Glee’s version of “Jingle Bells.”

At RMS, we believe that it is important to teach students the value of selfless giving, and the Christmas season is a wonderful time of the year that lends itself to these opportunities to give back selflessly to our community. This valuable mission is accomplished each year through the school’s participation in charities such as “Toys for Tots”. The great Rowntree family of students, staff and parents never ceases to amaze us by their generous contributions to our school’s fundraisers like the “The Mitten Tree” and food drives to help the less fortunate. This chance to promote the gift of giving is only a small part of RMS’ contribution to the community.

Reflecting on this event, it was indeed inspiring to see the love and care that our students put into their performances. The students received pride-filling cheers from the audience for their performance and were even awarded a token of appreciation in recognition of their enthusiastic contribution to this event. Needless to say, our students left the event feeling very proud and fulfilled by this unique experience. As educators, it is always rewarding to see our students develop a sense of pride and pleasure in reaching out to give their very best to a charitable cause.

Christmas Joys!

Evergreen boughs that fill our homes
With fragrant Christmas scents,
Hearts filled with the loving glow
That Christmas represents;

Christmas cookies, turkeys stuffed,
Festive holly berry,
Little faces bright with joy,
Loved ones being merry;

Parties, songs, beribboned gifts,
