The month of April heightens our awareness of the environment. For a moment, imagine walking barefoot on a sandy beach: every step you take disrupts the sand and leaves an imprint, a footprint to be precise. This concept can be applied to the environment. Everything that we do in our daily lives leaves something behind and makes an impact on the environment. Our ecological footprint, or eco- footprint, measures the amount of resources an individual consumes.
If an individual has a small ecological footprint, this means that they are environmentally conscious. There are many ways to be kind to the environment and shrink your own ecological footprint. You can take shorter showers, turn off lights or electronics when not in use, or even buy locally grown food. Cooperate with your community’s waste disposal program. Disposing garbage, organics, and hazardous items correctly will make a huge difference to our environment.
There are many ways to create an environmentally conscious generation and a greener, cleaner world. For example, we can: teach our children the 3 R’s – Reduce, Re-use, and Re-cycle, help them understand the difference between wants and needs, encourage them to find contentment in the simple things in life, and appreciate all of the resources available to us.
With the onset of spring, April is the focal point for environmental awareness. However, we must always remember that everything we do makes an impact on the Earth. Education and a healthy attitude towards conservation can effectively diminish the harsh effects of our day to day lives on the environment. There is only one Earth. We must all do our part to protect it!
