Imitation is a form of compliment, and many students try to imitate their teachers, parents, elders and siblings. We especially find this with younger kids. We at Rowntree Montessori Schools start teaching French as early as in the Pre-Kindergarten Class, and children do go home and imitate their French teacher to show off their newly learned French skills! We have often heard parents make positive comments about their children speaking in French, singing French songs, or pretending to be their French teacher with their dolls or toys at home.
In our Grade 1 class, students learn to make short conversations in French and they feel enthusiastic to converse with their older siblings or their relatives who speak French. Speaking in French has become so important that even if they need to use the washroom, or have any other needs to be fulfilled during the French class, it always has to be expressed in French! In class, they speak about their vacation to France or Quebec or some other Francophone country. When they have to order something at a restaurant, or look at labels or posters in French, their French vocabulary helps them tremendously. Students feel excited about teaching their parents French, and many parents mentioned that their children even corrected them by saying, “This is not how you should say it!” or “This is not how Madame Beedasy says it!” And so the tiny-tots become French teachers to their parents!
With so much happening in our French class, many students have made a wish to become French teachers when they grow up! And what reward can be bigger for a teacher but to have followers in French!
