Visit to the Legislative Assembly

On November 16, 2017, the Grade 8 students and two of our teachers got the opportunity to visit the Legislative Assembly of Ontario at Queen’s Park. The students boarded the school bus at 7:30 am and arrived at Queen’s Park at about 9:45 am. They were greeted by a tour guide who escorted them to a private room, where they left all mobile phones and school bags. Here they were given an overview of the necessary rules and regulations regarding behaviour. The students were able to quietly explore the main floor of the Assembly while completing a scavenger hunt based on details regarding the history of Confederation.

After this, the students and teachers were seated in the gallery to watch the question and answer period between the Government and the Opposition parties. This was a great learning opportunity for the students! They were also able to identify the Premier of Ontario, Honorable Kathleen Wynne. The tour was very much appreciated and ended with a discussion about the duties of the Speaker of the House. The students were commended for their excellent behaviour and we as teachers were proud to see the high level of interest throughout the day! We look forward to continuing to offer excellent out of classroom learning experiences like this moving forward, as it plays an important role in building a well-rounded education for the student.

Voted Best Private School for Fifth Consecutive Year!

We are pleased to announce that Rowntree Montessori Schools has been awarded the 2017 Readers Choice Platinum (#1) Award for BEST Private School! Support for Remembrance Day

Today at the RMS Academy Campus our students participated in an important Remembrance Day celebration. The celebration started with all students singing the Canadian national anthem, and was followed by Grade 4 students presenting a reading of In Flounder’s Fields by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. Grade 6 students also participated in a reading and our Pre-Kindergarten to Prep-One students worked hard to prepare readings and songs to show support for the many brave soldiers who have and continue to keep this country safe. Each class made a wreath of poppies to acknowledge the many fallen soldiers who have been part of keeping this country safe. Below is a video showing the Grade 1 to Grade 8 choirs (Junior and Senior Choirs) singing “Sing Out A Song of Peace.”

All ages of students are encouraged at RMS to understand the importance of Remembrance Day and to appreciate the history of this country. We all show support for the many brave people who fought during multiple wars, and who continue to serve this country around the world. Academy students were visited by Mr. Asif, a brave man who joined the Canadian reserve when he was in high-school. He is currently stationed at Fort York Armory in Toronto and is part of the Canadian Infantry. He explained to students the reason why we remember and celebrate on Remembrance Day. It is important that RMS students understand the history of Canada. Students were very interested in what Mr. Asif had to say, as his presence was engaging for students and teachers.

Healthy, Active Living

Here at Rowntree Montessori Schools, our aim is to ensure each student learns how to live a healthy and active lifestyle both for now, and in their future. Multiple components of our Physical Education program come together to ensure all students develop the skills and knowledge to make positive decisions throughout their lives. Focused health classes, game and fitness oriented physical education classes, extracurricular sports, as well as morning and after school clubs are just some of the components of our Physical Education program. Below is a video of Grade 2 students at the Academy campus practicing their underhand throwing skills at various stations during physical education class.

Through the use of the Thinking Games for Understanding Model (TGFU Model), students learn through playing active games. Using components from different sports, students learn skills and tactics through a variety of mini games, which ensures student engagement in every class. Starting at a young age, the focus of our program is the development of gross motor skills such as jumping and landing, throwing, running, and catching. Students’ gross motor skills are then developed into fine motor skills such as dribbling a ball, passing, shooting, and striking. As students grow, there is a larger focus on game tactics and rules, such as moving to open space, passing in front of a moving person, defending techniques and specific game knowledge. These skills are further developed through our school’s extracurricular sports and clubs.

The variety of extra-curricular activities our school offers will allow each student the opportunity to not only improve their physical fitness, but will also give them a chance to find an activity they wish to continue for the rest of their lives. We believe that student involvement in extra-curricular activities will lead to a well-rounded education. Therefore, we offer a wide variety of clubs, sports teams and house league activities in which students can become involved. Soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee, and fitness clubs are just a few examples of the variety of activities that are available for our students throughout the school year. With the goal of encouraging students to embrace and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle, we are putting our best foot forward by opening the doors to a wide range of opportunities for students to enjoy physical activity. Our morning and after school clubs are open to all students in a specific age group, and are intended to help students develop a lifelong love of sport. Clubs are structured so that everyone will play and enhance their skills. With this wide array of activities, we believe our students will not only benefit from the activities now, but they will also develop a lifelong passion for being physically active through sport.

We encourage all parents and guardians to encourage their children to make the most of the activities that are offered throughout the school.

Scholastic Book Fair Fun

This year our Scholastic Book Fair was a success at all campuses, running over a three day period! Not only did the purchasing of books from students and families help us earn ample funds that will go back into our schools and programmes, but together we earned over 100 new books for the campus libraries. During the Book Fair, students wrote up a wish list of books, took it home to review with parents, and then returned to purchase books the next day. With every purchase, a ballot was given for a chance to win a grand prize of $25 of free books for the student plus $25 of free books for his or her classroom. Everyone was excited to participate in this excitement!

We also garnered interest for the Book Fair by placing random tickets for free prizes in the Kindergarten classroom cubbies and student lockers throughout the school. The random winners were able to select a book as a prize! Students were also granted a surprise visit by Clifford the Big Red Dog during the last day of the Book Fair. His visit was especially exciting for the little ones, as he encourages them to enjoy reading, and is a familiar face!

Celebrating Culture at the Library

At RMS we believe in multiculturalism and integrating all of our ethnicities and cultures into our daily lives. Our students engage in multicultural activities and events which help the children to develop an understanding of other cultures. We encourage our children to have a positive self-regard for one’s own culture and in turn they build a positive attitude towards the cultures of others. We provide multiple opportunities for our students to explore the similarities and differences as this helps them develop an understanding and appreciation for all. Over the past few weeks, our Downtown Campus Prep-One to Grade 2 students have been busy learning about the African culture, primarily an African dance. This year students had the pleasure once again to showcase their performance at the Brampton Library.

At all of our campuses we strive to teach acceptance and tolerance for all cultures, and participating in community events is one way that we can do just that. The Cultural Days Festival is an event that we have participated in for multiple years, as it gives our students an opportunity to learn and prepare a choreographed song and dance and perform for their families and other families in the community. Our students believe strongly in the need to celebrate culture and we will continue to encourage them to do so moving forward. WE DAY Kenyan Boys Choir

Last week the Academy campus Grade 8 students were fortunate enough to participate in WE DAY as part of celebrating the values of the Free the Children foundation. Academy students were also visited by the Kenyan Boys Choir and watched them perform live! This team of talented singers and musicians is an African traditional and contemporary male choir. The group is based in the city of Nairobi, Kenya, yet travels the world doing performances. Since Rowntree Montessori Schools is a participant in WE Day activities throughout the year, we were given the great honor of seeing the spectacular choir perform live.

Our students were very excited to see this talented group sing and dance. They performed multiple songs for students and teachers, some of which were new to the students and some of which many recognized and could follow along with. We are all very appreciative of the performance and hope to see the choir perform again in the future.

Teaching in the Age of Technology

Teaching children who are born into a highly advanced age of technology can be a challenge. Students need to feel excited about their learning, and they need to be taught in ways that address their different learning styles. With technology rapidly changing our world, teachers are now faced with the task of preparing students for jobs that are yet to exist! Analysts claim that students of the future will be using technology that has yet to be invented, to solve problems that do not currently exist. It goes on to say that the amount of technical information has been doubling every two years. In addition, some of the jobs most in demand right now, did not even exist ten years ago, such as: app developer, web experience designer, social media manager, and chief listening officers. So, how can we help students prepare for their futures? The video below shows a young student using the interactive whiteboard to share her answer with the class.

Thus there is a very important need to incorporate technology into our curriculum, in a variety of ways. Enhancing lessons using different types of media such as video, websites, interactive activities, and even video games are a few of the ways this need can be achieved. Research shows us that surgeons who play video games make less mistakes, and perform surgeries more quickly (Dobnik 2004). In addition, students should also be taught how to use these media for their own purposes by creating their own videos and online media for assignments. Students should be comfortable navigating these types of technologies to suit their purposes.

Teaching our students Digital literacy and Citizenship is equally necessary in order for them to thrive and survive in the world of technology! Much like media literacy, digital literacy refers to understanding how these technologies are used, and how they may influence us. It also involves questioning what they are seeing online. Digital citizenship refers to how people relate and respond to online content. It is their own online presence. With more and more interactions taking place online, students need to learn things such as email etiquette. Students also need to learn about keeping themselves safe online. That means not mentioning in their Facebook status where they are going that night, or taking pictures where identifying information can be obtained. Students also need to learn that everything they post online becomes part of their digital footprint which will follow them. It needs to be made very clear that their online interactions will affect them in the ‘real’ world. In addition, it has now become common for potential employers to search their candidates on social media before hiring them. As a result, it is important students learn how to represent themselves appropriately.

Our advances in technology require that we as teachers, change our teaching styles and cater to the recent changing and developing needs of the generation. By doing this we are helping our students learn the skills they need to succeed so that they can successfully shape their futures.

Practice Makes Perfect

“Practice makes perfect” is a phrase that most of us have probably heard at some point in our lives. At the very least, we have been told that in order to improve a skill or talent, the key word is PRACTICE! Music is a great way to develop the discipline of practice. It can influence the way a child progresses in developing other skills as well. Even though this skill is dependent on the individual student, it is important to establish a regular routine to allow development of that particular skill or talent.

Playing a musical instrument or developing the ability to sing requires consistent practice in order to improve. As a music teacher, one of the biggest challenges is to ensure students routinely practice. Introducing practice schedules can be a challenge. The life of a student revolves around school work, extra-curricular activities, social networking and of course they need FAMILY TIME!

Establishing a schedule for practice times gives students the chance to get it done BEFORE the homework starts. Some students find it easier to do in the morning before going to school. Others may even practice after homework is completed every evening! Usually students find it easier if the schedule is divided up into smaller durations of time throughout the day. Practice charts usually work well, especially for younger children, and stickers can be VERY motivational.

There are many ways to encourage students to practice, and goal setting is a great way to ensure they have something to work towards an exam, recital, concert, or even preparing a song for family and friends will help motivate a student.

Parents, teachers and coaches need to find a way to motivate their students in both a fun and productive way, and to always strive to do their very best.

Consistent practice will facilitate the development of a student’s skills and talents, and will establish the foundation for self-discipline – something that we all know is an important life value.
