At Rowntree Montessori Schools, our students learn about real-world issues. For instance, in Grade 8 geography, one of the many topics that our students learn about is wealth disparity around the world. After a series of lectures, students explored fair trade using different websites and by watching videos. Students then created a media campaign to demonstrate their understanding of this topic. Students created a poster, a brochure and a video to bring awareness of the fair trade system.
This is a perfect example of Cross-Curriculum teaching and learning and how it is incorporated at Rowntree Montessori Schools. Our grade 8 students completed assignments using the language (media and writing) curriculum as well as the geography curriculum. In addition to this, students learned how to develop a media campaign, using their creativity skills, and designed a video, using 21st Century Learning. This lesson was all tied back to a real-world issue, which makes learning much more interesting and relevant to our students.
