Learning about Deforestation

One of the Rowntree Montessori Schools’ goals is to ensure that our students learn the skill of problem solving, but not just in the classroom. We want our students to take these skills and have the ability to apply them in everyday life. With this in mind, our students are tasked with developing solutions to real-world problems.

Recently our students were taught about the issue of Deforestation in their social studies class. Students learned about different countries that are affected by deforestation and had the opportunity to label these countries on a world map, using a Smart Board. Students had the chance to learn about a real world problem using state-of-the-art technology.

There are many benefits of students learning using technology, such as the Smart Board, in the classroom. Smart Boards are interactive, low maintenance, provide access to a wealth of online resources, are environmentally friendly, provide better visuals, accommodate different styles of learning, and help integrate technology in the classroom. Why Field Trips are an Important Part of a Student’s Education

A Trip Down Memory Lane for our Grade 4 Students

A few weeks ago, our grade 4 students had the opportunity to visit Black Creek Pioneer Village. The students had the chance to experience what a student’s life was like in the 1860s. School life in the 1800s is very different from life in the 21st Century. One student stated, “I thought that the field trip was an extraordinary experience. My favourite part was when we went to the school house and learned arithmetic and how to sing ‘God Save the Queen’. I also liked seeing the Stong’s two houses. If I lived in the 1800’s I would feel strange living in a time with no internet!”

Getting the children to look back and think about what life was like then was not only a lesson in history and social studies, but also provided them with a chance to reflect on how fortunate they are to have creature comforts like not worrying about what they would have for breakfast, lunch or dinner, a warm house and school, electricity, television, and technology such as the internet, etc. The students also had a discussion about how we think Education might be different in the next 150 years.

There are many educational benefits to taking students on field trips. Children learn about real-life experiences, through real-world learning. Attention Brampton Residents! Going to the Santa Claus Parade this Year?

Be part of a Special Interactive Light Show at this year’s Brampton Santa Claus Parade!

It’s that time of year again! The Brampton Santa Claus parade is taking place on Saturday November 16^th, 2019 at 5 p.m. sharp.

Rowntree Montessori Schools has been part of the Brampton community for 50 years, with four campuses across the city. In conjunction with our 50^th anniversary and the holiday season, we are planning our biggest and best float for this year’s parade. We have a little surprise in store for Brampton residents who will be watching along the parade route and want to participate in a memorable parade experience.

Rowntree Montessori Schools is planning an interactive light experience for this year’s Santa Claus parade. Both parade participants and marchers will be wearing a number of remote-controlled light LED wristbands that will brightly light up with a variety of festive colours, programmed to Rowntree Montessori Schools float’s holiday music. You may have been to a concert where these wristbands were used as part of the interactive crowd experience.

To make this an even bigger and brighter interactive experience, we want as many parade spectators to participate as possible, so we are inviting anyone who is planning on attending the Santa Claus parade to purchase their Santa Claus parade remote-controlled light wristbands, while quantities last. The cost to purchase each band is $5.00. We recommend 2 LED wristbands per person. Please note only cash payments will be accepted.

The Importance of Learning Values at Rowntree Montessori Schools with the Golden Boot Award

At the First Student of the Month Assembly this year, the “clean-freak” Grade 4A students were the proud recipients of the First Golden Boot Award for the 2019-20 Academic Year at Rowntree Montessori Schools’ Academy Campus.

These grade 4 students were thrilled beyond words as they rejoiced during the Student of the Month Assembly after being announced the proud recipients of the Golden Boot Award! But let’s rewind a little, back to the year 2007. At this time, Rowntree was having a difficult time keeping our students’ shoe and boot racks neat and tidy and as an incentive, the Rowntree’s management came up with a brilliant idea, the infamous ‘Golden Boot Award.’ Since then, every year, the grade 4s have been diligently working towards the goal of being the first Golden Boot Award recipients. The competition is stiff and the feat is not small, but after years of dedication and hard work, the 4A class defeated their opponents, proudly!

So what’s this victory mean? It means a badge of honour and bragging rights in the hallways at Rowntree. It means proudly displaying the Golden Boot trophy until next month’s Student of the Month assembly. It involves keeping the shoe and boot rack clean, being involved in the regular maintenance and tidiness of all shoes and boots on a daily basis.

But more importantly, this award signifies the importance of being respective of your school environment and cleaning up after yourself and helping out. School is a place where our children are not only educated academically, but they are also educated in the wellness of life. This includes the importance of maintaining a tidy, organized and clean working environment. Congrats to Class 4A on this well-deserved award!

Using Grocery Flyers to Teach Math Skills in Grade 3

At Rowntree Montessori Schools, our teaching method focuses on 21^st Century Learning. 21^st Century Learning refers to “the skills and technologies that will position students to succeed in a world that ever increasingly requires collaboration, critical thinking, adaptability, grit, perseverance and relies less on the learning of facts and data. The “how” and “why” of learning becomes central and is far more important than the “what” or “who” from past models. Students must approach lifelong learning with a flexible mindset as they tackle 21^st century issues. They must learn to work with and listen to a variety of points of view.[1]

This past week, one of our grade 3 classes tackled a “real world” task where they were provided with various grocery flyers, given a budget and asked to plan out their groceries for the week. Students were given time to look through different grocery stores’ flyers and research which store had the best prices and items that they wanted to purchase. Students were also asked to determine where the foods and items they chose originated from, and if the item came from live stock or was pre-packaged. This provided the class with an opportunity to use their math skills, social studies’ skills and communication skills. In addition, students learned that fresh foods are much healthier options than packaged foods. Students worked in groups as well, which provided them with an opportunity to problem-solve and work as a team.

Rowntree Montessori Schools believes that it is important for our students to have a connection with what they are learning and link their learning to a real world situation.

Voted Best Private School for Eighth Consecutive Year!

We are extremely proud to announce that Rowntree Montessori Schools (RMS) has been voted as the BEST Private School by the 2019 Brampton Guardian Readers’ Choice Awards. This is the eighth consecutive year that RMS has been recognized with this highest distinction from readers of the Brampton Guardian.

This past week, Storm, a Grade 1 student, surprised her teacher with a good morning message using coding skills she learned in the classroom. This moment demonstrated Storm’s engagement and interest in her Computer and Technology class, which allowed her to use these newly acquired tech skills outside of the learning space. Rowntree Montessori Schools supports 21^st century learning and ensuring that our students have strong tech skills that will help them prepare for their futures. 21^st century skills not only provide a framework for successful learning in the classroom, but also help to ensure students thrive in a world where change is constant and learning never stops.
