Working Together for Terry

This is What We Can Do When We all Work Together

RMS Students Walking for the Terry Fox Foundation

Over the past few weeks, Rowntree Montessori Schools students have been running, walking, biking and working together for an important cause, the Terry Fox Foundation. Did you know that Terry Fox ran for 143 days in a row and ran a total of 5,373 kilometres before stopping just outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario? Terry was forced to stop because cancer had spread to his lungs. Before returning to BC for treatment, Terry said “I’m gonna do my best. I’ll fight. I promise I won’t give up”.

Every year, thousands of Canadians participate in Terry Fox Runs and Terry Fox Fundraising events. To-date, over $800 million dollars has been raised for cancer research in Terry’s name.

RMS Raises $5,675 for the Terry Fox Foundation

RMS is incredibly proud to report that our teachers, students and their families raised over $5,675 in Terry’s name. Our students, teachers and staff ran/walked/biked a total of 3,100 kms collectively. These totals will go down in the RMS record books.

We’d like to thank our generous supporters for their ongoing support. Over the past few weeks our students have been learning about Terry Fox, a Canadian legend and hero, and have been busy walking, running and getting active, all while generating awareness about this important cause.

Developing Well-Rounded Students

RMS supports the development of well-rounded individuals, by teaching them character development and values, and helping our students build the confidence to share his or her talents and skills, as well as to have empathy and compassion for those in need. RMS students learn about giving back to the communities that they live in, as well as participating in important causes, such as the Terry Fox Fun. The Terry Fox Run is an annual Rowntree Montessori Schools’ tradition.

Kudos to Kindness

A Little Bit of Kindness Goes a Long Way

Kudos to Kindness! We all know that a little bit of kindness goes a long way. This is especially true during troubling and stressful times. With schools closed, Rowntree Montessori Schools has our students set up to work remotely during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The positive feedback that we have received from our parents and students has been heartwarming!

We would like to take a moment to thank our Rowntree students and their families for the kind words they have shared with us. During a difficult and challenging time, where it is tough to escape negativity, a little bit of kindness goes a long way. Together, as a community and family, we are stronger together than we are apart. We’d like to thank our Rowntree students and their families for their kind words and support.

Using Grocery Flyers to Teach Math Skills in Grade 3

At Rowntree Montessori Schools, our teaching method focuses on 21^st Century Learning. 21^st Century Learning refers to “the skills and technologies that will position students to succeed in a world that ever increasingly requires collaboration, critical thinking, adaptability, grit, perseverance and relies less on the learning of facts and data. The “how” and “why” of learning becomes central and is far more important than the “what” or “who” from past models. Students must approach lifelong learning with a flexible mindset as they tackle 21^st century issues. They must learn to work with and listen to a variety of points of view.[1]

This past week, one of our grade 3 classes tackled a “real world” task where they were provided with various grocery flyers, given a budget and asked to plan out their groceries for the week. Students were given time to look through different grocery stores’ flyers and research which store had the best prices and items that they wanted to purchase. Students were also asked to determine where the foods and items they chose originated from, and if the item came from live stock or was pre-packaged. This provided the class with an opportunity to use their math skills, social studies’ skills and communication skills. In addition, students learned that fresh foods are much healthier options than packaged foods. Students worked in groups as well, which provided them with an opportunity to problem-solve and work as a team.

Rowntree Montessori Schools believes that it is important for our students to have a connection with what they are learning and link their learning to a real world situation.

The Influence of Positive Values

As stated by J. Catapano, “morality is responsible for helping students best apply their education for their own personal benefit and the benefit of their surrounding society.” At Rowntree Montessori Schools, we believe that when students are regularly exposed to discussion and learning activities that encourage positive values such as leadership, ambition, tolerance and grit, we see improved character, better homework completion, declines in conflicts, a more mature understanding of tasks, preparedness and comfort in the classroom, and many other factors that positively influence student learning. We recognize that throughout the day there are many teachable moments, where teachers can help students learn about what the right thing to do is in any given situation, and engage them in a discussion that challenges them to evaluate and determine the most appropriate course of action. We ensure that our teachers embody what an ethical professional looks like, making sure that they conduct themselves upon the highest moral standards possible, while always showcasing responsibility and our monthly values in the classroom. Our goal is to ensure that each student who graduates from RMS is able to successfully problem solve any challenge that aries, and to conduct themselves in a positive manner as good citizens of the community. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stated, “intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

Every month at RMS we highlight a specific value. At the end of each month, the one student from each class from Grade 1 to Grade 8 who best personifies the stated value, receives a certificate to commemorate their positive contribution to the school community by exemplifying value based characteristics and ethical behavior. This type of value-based education is very important, as it takes our core-subjects a step ahead, bringing positive values into class work. This year, some of the values that we highlighted were friendship, teamwork, leadership, grit, and commitment. As stated by one of our teachers of Grade 8 Math and Science, “these values are important in helping students obtain outstanding personal and academic achievements.” Teaching about friendship as an example, has helped our students learn the true importance of being a good friend, especially when working together to achieve a common goal. Focusing on friendship ensures that our students are not afraid to share their knowledge with each other, as they genuinely want to ensure that each of their peers is successful. When we teach Grade 8 students about leadership, each child is given the chance to emerge as leaders in groups when collaborating in class projects. Students working on lab investigations in Science class are given the opportunity to be leaders, make decisions and organize the members in their group to work towards achieving a common goal of getting successful results. Teachers do not have to assign a leader for the group, as the leaders emerge whenever the students are collaborating.

According to Psychologist Sherrie Campbell, there are a few important values to teach your child during adolescence, which include teamwork, self-care, how to see possibilities when others see problems, motivation, time management, the ability to accept responsibility, and importantly, the act of kindness. Campbell suggests that “the value of teamwork keeps our children from being self-centered and entitled, and that parents must help their children understand they can only go so far in life alone. A parent’s goal should be to show children that joining forces with others, enhances each child’s personal power and elevates the success of everyone.” She also suggests that when it comes to teaching about self-care, “personal power and complacency cannot co-exist. One should teach their children to dedicate time and energy whenever necessary, to ensure that no important areas of what they need to accomplish are being neglected.” Campbell suggests that “it is each parent’s job to teach children that if they cannot find a solution, they must open their mind, seek the advice of others and apply new ideas and suggestions until barriers are removed and their problem is solved.”

When it comes to teaching a child about personal motivation, it is important that “we parent children with a motivation mindset, by teaching children to consistently monitor, evaluate and adjust to the work ahead of them.” Campbell also suggests that personal success is “deeply rooted in having exceptional time-management skills. She says that we must parent our children to get their most important tasks accomplished first.” As well, that “for our children to be and feel successful, we must parent them to understand that whatever happens in their life or career, the best path to follow is always to take responsibility for the outcomes, both positive and negative, which are the result of their efforts.” Lastly Campbell notes that “there is no greater a value to teach our children than the value of kindness.” Click here to read the full article on the importance of teaching values to children, written by Psychologist Sherrie Campbell.

Creative & Innovative Classrooms

The classroom is a space where minds are nurtured and nourished. Devising creative and innovative ways to teach concepts and consolidate knowledge is one of the primary goals of a teacher. In light of this fact, fun and games can come into play to accomplish a set goal. Games help children to think strategically, solve problems creatively and develop social skills which require them to follow rules, and await their turn.

Education in the early part of the 20th century tended to focus on the acquisition of basic skills and content knowledge, like reading, writing, calculation, history or science. Many experts believe that success in the 21st century depends on education that treats higher order skills, like the ability to think, solve complex problems or interact critically through language and media.

In our quest for developing well-rounded learners we strive to apply innovative ideas to solidify skills and ignite a creative edge in our students. Last year our Grade 6 students developed their very own original games to play with the students of Grades 1 and 2. It was rewarding to watch the students of different ages and grade levels interact with each other and cooperate with ease, following rules and taking turns to solve word problems in Math. The younger students showed no fear of failing when the answer was incorrect. The older students who lead the activity displayed patience and dedication in their efforts to help their younger peers to succeed.

Incorporating creative games into everyday learning strengthens students’ focus and keeps them consistently involved in the learning process. Seeking innovative ways that will spark a passion for learning is an ongoing goal that Rowntree Montessori Schools is proudly committed to accomplishing.

Reflections of Leadership – Student Essays

The following excerpts are reflections of the Grade 7 students’ experiences at Leadership Camp:

My first time going to camp was so much fun! I learned quite a lot of things I never thought of doing, but with the help and support of my classmates, doing them was pretty fun.

I remember when everyone was going on the high ropes course. At first it looked fun, but when I got up there it was so scary. I tried not to look at the ground. As I got to the last rope I said, “That’s it.” So I told Courtney [our camp leader] I didn’t want to do it anymore, and she told me to lean back and let go, so I did. When I got to the ground I started to cry. Courtney told me I did so well, but I didn’t think so. I thought I could have done better and made it all the way to the top.

The next day, after lunch, we went to go do the low ropes course. It was a fun team effort; we had to get everyone through the holes that were formed by ropes. So, what we did was have two strong people lift the shorter people to the top and put them through the top holes. After that, we decided who would go through which holes on the bottom.

Later that day, we all had to get into groups of three because we were going canoeing. At first, it was really hard learning how to row, but I got used to it. As we were rowing, we bumped into a few trees, but then we made a plan to make a steady beat so we could all row at the same pace and the same time. We started going faster and soon we were making nice sharp turns. I learned that we needed to take our time and actually work as a team. We got back to the dock second last, but we worked hard and had fun, so we were all winners.

After that trip, I have gotten more confident with myself because of my classmates’ help. I am starting to reach my goal to talk louder and be okay with how I sound and what I say. My best friend is always there for me, and she is my biggest inspiration; without her, I wouldn’t be where I am now. If there were an inspirational award I would definitely choose her to win. So overall, I really loved this trip and I will never forget it.

Last week I had the privilege of going to Leadership Camp. Yes, I did a lot of fun activities, but I learned some valuable things, too.

I think the majority of people think “leadership” means to be the one in charge. They think it means that they are the only ones allowed to lead. This concept is completely against teamwork. At camp, one of the concepts we focused on was “fellowship.” We participated in different activities that taught us not only how to lead, but how to let others help you lead too.

Along the lines of “fellowship,” we also focused on the idea of “support” (a good leader has to be supportive). The high ropes course, rock climbing, and the Leap of Faith were very frightening for some people, including me! Support from my peers was definitely the only thing that kept me going. In order to be a good leader, you need to support people mentally and emotionally (i.e. with the decisions they make) as well as when they do physical tasks.

Leadership Camp is three days without your parents. I don’t have any problem spending time away from my parents, but I’m sure other people do. Parents are always there for you, and when you leave home, you not only feel sad and homesick, but you also feel like you can’t do anything. While spending time at camp, you build valuable skills you’ll use later on in life when you’re living by yourself. I would definitely recommend to parents to send their children to camp. You build memories there – valuable memories, fun memories. They are the best memories you will ever make.

I learned a lot of different traits at camp this year. The camp leaders emphasized leadership as a big and valuable trait at camp. The activities we did there required a lot of leadership, support, courage, empowerment, and kindness.

We showed support at a lot of our activities. At the high ropes course and rock climbing wall, we cheered on everybody so they would gain more confidence. It did help them, but some people did not need it. I learned that leadership is not only guiding someone, but also helping them and supporting them. Camp taught me a lot about how to trust someone on the low ropes course; we had to carry some people through a rope web without actually touching the rope itself.

Camp is a great way to experience different things. If you have never been away from your parents, this is a great way to come out of your comfort zone. If you do not like heights, camp is a great way to get over your fear since you are climbing and jumping off things.

Camp teaches you a lot of discipline and encourages healthy habits for meals. If you put a lot of food on your plate, you still have to finish your food so up don’t waste anything. If you normally have juice with every meal, you need to make different choices. Each table has to have two pitchers of water before you can have any juice. You do not get juice for dinner; it’s only milk or water. You have to use polite words if you want someone to pass the food. That is what I learned from camp.

Teamwork

Team building workshops have been an important part of learning at Rowntree for the past several years. In order to allow our students to come together in various team working scenarios, we have participated in numerous workshops.

Working together as a group to solve tasks

We feel that it is very important to foster an understanding and respect for every member of the class, and to take our team building skills to the next level. Of course, during lesson time, there are always plenty of opportunities to work in groups and teams to achieve academic goals. However, we wanted to take this concept further. A number of external and internal workshops were set up in order to achieve this goal.

Our first team building activity was an internal workshop delivered in February. Students worked in teams as architects and designers to create strong structures. Their hands on, practical skills were tested.

Grade five went on a journey to the wilderness centre. Here, they were able to exercise and demonstrate their team work and leadership qualities in different outdoor activities, bringing the class together as one unit.

The Grade 5 students had a very creative and highly engaging workshop with ‘Skills Ladder’. Skills Ladder organizes interpersonal communication skills enhancing workshops for school children. Students worked on enhancing their Interpersonal communication skills in Active Listening, Getting Involved, Right Body Language and Conflict Resolution.

All of these skills may sound very ordinary, but are very desirable leadership and resilience building skills. These skills are rarely taught, but are required when working in a team environment. It was great to see Grade 5 students working with their teams and enjoying being a part of it. They had many opportunities to explore their Interpersonal communication skills while participating in the workshop. They learned how to listen, compliment and encourage each other while respecting different ideas. Most importantly, they learned about conflict resolution -a skill many adults struggle to master.

Students in grade 5 joined forces with our grade 6 class at leadership camp this year. This year’s camp focus was on the environment and energy conservation. Camp Ki-Wa-Y was held over 2 days and set up by the YMCA. The students took part in many outdoor activities with energy conservation as their focus. Students developed their teamwork skills through whole class, team, and small group activities that focused on recognizing each other’s strengths, exploring different ways of positive communication, and encouraging others to accomplish individual goals.

Our culminating teamwork challenge came in the form of a tree top trekking course set in the tree line of Heart Lake Conservation area. The students had to work together in order to complete the obstacle courses set up in the trees. Students showed tremendous respect and concern for their grade members, along with skills they have learned throughout the school year.

On an Island…In a Classroom!

Getting to know and work well with classmates during the school year is always exciting, but also an anxious time for some students. In an effort to break the ice and create a caring and friendly environment in Grade 2, we focused on team-building to help our students to feel important and included within their classroom community. The activity was designed to encourage ALL students to have a voice, to be heard, to listen to others and to co-operate with ALL members of the classroom in order to accomplish a common goal.

Students really enjoyed our “stranded on an island” activity, which included children working together to move everyone from one island to the other without leaving anyone behind, and keeping everyone safe from the “dangerous creatures” lurking in the water. Using two hula hoops as a “safe place”, students were required to communicate, listen and co-operate to transport all of the class from one island to the other. At the beginning, the students tried to transport all the students at the same time, which was impossible to achieve. After a few minutes, some students realized they could transport a few people at one time, and repeat the process. To my surprise and delight, not only did they achieve this goal fairly quickly, they took turns sending different friends to “rescue” others. All students worked co-operatively and diligently to help each other to reach their destination safely. During our concluding discussion, we examined their experiences and their strategies, and explored ways we could implement those strategies to our everyday learning.

This activity certainly struck a chord with our students as they learned valuable skills such as connecting with others, solving problems and respecting people around them; essential skills which were hopefully etched into their young minds and carried with them into the future!

This exercise was a great example of early implementation of the inquiry-based model, as students were provided with a problem, but needed to work their way through the solution, rather than being told how to succeed by the teacher…a fine way to begin “Nurturing Tomorrow’s Achievers”!
