Students striving to be ‘Mathletes’

Mathletics in Rowntree Montessori’s Curriculum

Here at Rowntree, we are always willing to embrace new concepts and the use of technology in the classroom. So when we discovered a fully interactive, global Mathematics program, we jumped at the chance to get on board! Last year, the grade 5 students were selected to try out the interactive website for 2 weeks. Three days into the trial, parents were commenting on their kids coming home and sitting in front of the computer for hours challenging themselves. The incentive was definitely there. Comments were flying, “I schooled a teacher”, “Whoa, look at him go” and so on. I have never in all my years of teaching seen a class so excited about math. Due to the overwhelmingly positive feedback, we proceeded to implemented this amazing program into our Math curriculum.

So How does Mathletics work?

‘Mathletics’ is the next generation in learning. It helps students to embrace Math. To date, it is the worlds most used Mathematics website. Over 10,000 schools worldwide are registered, and over 3.5 million students use the website. The site covers all aspects of Mathematics and is suitable for students aged 5 to 18. The website is unique in the sense that it responds to the individual student and their strengths and weaknesses. Students know if they are on the right track and can improve at their own pace, including step by step animated support, which is like having an animated teacher on your shoulder, guiding you through the whole process. Another aspect of the site is “Live Mathematics”, which interests many of the students. This is where they can challenge Mathletes around the world! They challenge each other to real time mental math games of speed and skill. Teachers are fully integrated into the website and set the pace for each individual student, without students feeling segregated from their peers. They are able to control what ability range the student can access as well as the course content. Weekly progress reports can also be emailed to parents, to keep them in the loop.

Science Rules!

Contrary to what we were all brought up to believe, textbooks are not the only way to teach students new concepts. Sometimes the visual and tangible can be the best way to accomplish teaching goals! A component of the Ontario Kindergarten Science Curriculum is plants… and so much fun can be had when using a hands-on teaching technique to teach students about plant life. The Kindergarten teachers at RMS thought and thought about how we could allow these youngsters to get their hands nice and dirty, all while learning. So why not grow a vegetable plant in our own classroom we pondered. This way, students would get first hand exposure to what nature really does for us.

Our kids were ecstatic to learn that they’d be able to get involved and actually be a part of the planting and maintenance process as the seeds grew into plants. Each group was given a small pot; a bowl of soil, and a handful of seeds. We began the experiment by ensuring that each student knew what the expectations were, and we explained that in order to have a plant grow, it needed to go through a number of steps. The students started off by filling their pots with soil and then they made holes in the soil for their seeds to be placed in. The kids were then given seeds to be placed in the holes; finally, they covered the seeds with the surrounding soil. The students were then reminded of the importance of proper watering and sunshine, without which the plants would just not grow! Each morning, all of the students were eager to water their personal pots and they anxiously waited for the fruits of their labour to poke through.

As a teacher, it was so exciting to come back to school on Monday and see all of their pots filled with sprouting plants! The joy that spread across our students’ faces upon entering the room that day was indescribable. They could not contain their pride and excitement when taking the plants home to show their parents what they had accomplished. After a few days, many of our students’ parents let us know that care for the plants was continuing at home. This was more than just a great hands-on experience for the children – it was also a skill that they could carry forward through life.

Excitement About Math at the RMS Shopping Mall

It is that time in our school calendar when pencils and books are replaced with purses and shopping bags. Rowntree Montessori hosted its third annual Math Day “Shop Until you Drop” bonanza, which is yet another exciting day dedicated to learning in a fun-filled way, “Rowntree Style”! Math Day is devoted to stimulating math activities with a focus on the unit of money. The entire upper level of the school is transformed into a mini shopping mall for this entertaining, yet educational event.

The students from grades four to seven are assigned the responsibility of setting up stores, and the Grade Eight students take on the responsibility of organizing the finances, while our Kindergarten to Grade Three students have the privilege of being shoppers! Rowntree Montessori’s Athletic and Academic Council, “RMAAC”, steps up to offer their services as mall security.

As the much awaited Math Day approached, things kicked into high gear, the “Rowntree Dollar” was issued, and with a debit card of forty dollars and an additional forty dollars in coins and notes, the shoppers were ready to take on the day! The halls were bustling with busy shoppers. Store owners stood at their doors, enticing shoppers with coupons and special offers for the day. “Rowntree City Centre” was opened for business and buzzing with excitement! This year, in addition to the ever popular clothes stores, toys and book stores, as well as shoes and accessories stores, Rowntree City Centre opened its doors to a real estate office and an ice cream parlour!

It was indeed interesting to watch how the students shopped; some got through their money even before their shopping spree period had ended! Others were more thoughtful and careful in their spending.

The Grade Eight students did an amazing job of explaining the banking system to our shoppers. Plenty of guidance and advice was offered to the younger students, who were so excited to spend their Rowntree Dollars! Some of them made multiple visits to the bank to top up their debit cards, while others managed to save a few dollars, even after a full day of shopping.

The day’s events concluded with a fashion show organized by the students of Grades Seven and Eight. Apparently, math is not limited to text books, notebooks, tests, quizzes, and assignments, as modelled by our students who were adorned in a variety of mathematical concepts which they incorporated into creative outfits! The fashion show took our school community by storm! The students danced and cheered to the upbeat music that accompanied our runway models and they cruised down the aisle in their mathematical attires!

Math Day was yet another event that clearly succeeded in bringing into focus some inspiring values which we strive to engrain in our students from a very early age: Dedication, Responsibility, Co-operation, Commitment, Leadership, and Unity. As educators and administrators, it is always rewarding to see these values develop as our students guide each other with confidence and ease through the many real-world experiences they encounter in their school lives.

STEM in the classroom!

By Grade 7, students are beginning to realize that humans have significant impacts on the environment. In science class, the students analysed some of these impacts and their consequences, while reflecting upon their personal responsibility to protect the environment. During investigations, the students will observe existing ecosystems and investigate factors that may affect balances within the system. Students will learn that ecosystems consist of communities of plants and animals that are dependent upon each other as well as on the non-living parts of the environment.

As a culmination exercise at the end of the unit of work, the students are given an inquiry based research project question to do with the ecosystem. The students choose an ecosystem and designed a food web using technology to show how organisms feed at different levels. They then take the design a step further by creating a model of the ecosystem with discarded materials; they had to use not only their hands-on abilities, but stretch their thinking to recycle already used materials to fashion new items. This year, the students digitally created their ecosystems using the Chromebooks.

as the animals eat, the beautiful sun glows.

they’re calm and go with the flow.

a match was struck and the flame was spread afar.

Spread through the forest, killed plants and all the speed of a racing car.

It was sad, I felt so bad, for all natures beauty destroyed.

And that is the story of old natures glory being destroyed.

As these abilities become obtained and refined at such a young age, it is definitely something that can be considered incredibly marketable in their futures. An ultimate goal of any teacher is to ensure students leave the class with the tools to become whomever they desire, and to succeed in their chosen field.

Scientists in School

The return to school after a long winter break is always a tough time. Luckily, students were fortunate enough to come back to school for some fun hands-on science activities this year. In lieu of the usual monthly field trip, January and February offered students the opportunity to attend grade level related science workshops which were run by real life scientists! The fact that the students had one-on-one time with a scientist really had them excited. Overhearing their conversations showed me that their excitement stemmed from the fact that a “real scientist” would teach them “real science”, thus exposing them to things they would never even THINK of doing. Their minds were opened to the possibilities of what science has to offer, other than just book learning and hypothetical situations.

The Science workshops lasted for half of the day, with students rotating through 5 different stations within the room and surrounding areas. Each station had a specific aspect of the grade’s science curriculum to influence the theme of the workshop. The workshop started with a background information and knowledge check, to determine the level of familiarity which the students had. If they were at a level which could be found at the beginning of the unit, they would address the basic stages of the topic, and if they were working at a level towards the end of the unit, the content was much more in depth and complex. This allowed the scientists to adjust the style of teaching that they were putting forth.

My fourth grade class, while working on the pulleys and gears unit, were asked to experiment with the directionality of gears and the ways to lessen the load lift through a pulley system. The students showed great interest in the topic, and as we were at the halfway point of the unit, they worked on aspects that allowed them to solidify the knowledge they still did not fully comprehend, and develop a well- rounded body of knowledge. The kindergarten classes had the opportunity to participate in physical activity that was linked to their science unit. The grade sevens had the chance to play with fire, because honestly, what seventh grader wouldn’t be excited to play with fire?!

These experiences not only allowed for students to learn, but the hands-on approaches brought by the Scientists in School, allowed for the students to have a greater grasp of the concepts which they are currently learning about in science. They get to physically touch, manipulate, and deal with the topics at hand, and that furthered their knowledge and understanding of the materials. Hands-on learning also gave students the chance to experience the things they are learning on a different level than they normally would have. This type of learning enables those who are tactile and visual learners a greater opportunity to grasp and understand the information that is presented to them. The participation and physicality of the Scientists in School workshops opened many minds to topics and concepts of Science, and gave students a greater appreciation of scientific models.

To me, the importance of hosting practical workshops such as Scientist in School is self-explanatory and truly something that can benefit students. It excites students about science, and opens their eyes to what science is all about. So here’s to another successful year of Scientists in School workshops!

RMS is “STEM”ing into the 21st Century

“STEM” is the acronym commonly used for “Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics”. A STEM educational approach provides students with the opportunity to see these four disciplines as one integrated body of knowledge and skills. It also helps to prepare the students to become more marketable when they apply for a job in the years to come. Statistics have shown that a large portion of future jobs will be STEM related, so why not prepare them for this eventuality?

By integrating STEM at a young age, students will become more proficient, allowing these skills to become a part of who they are. STEM has always been integrated into their learning in our programme. However, this year even further emphasis has been placed on linking Science and Math, particularly with regards to their integration with technology. Science and Math are taught to children in a manner whereby they can actually apply their knowledge; they leave not only with knowledge, but with the life skills that will help them succeed. Encouraging students to build, design, and engineer their assignments early on allows for a different type of learner and thinker. The exposure to Chromebooks allows for students to become more technologically coherent, an ability that will be extremely useful to them in the future.

In Grade 6, students were asked to design a space probe. Last year they had been asked to create the same item from recycled materials. This year they were asked to complete it through technological means, and the results were remarkable!

It has been sincerely wonderful watching the students’ learning take place during this adaptation to a STEM approach of teaching. With the regular use of technology, in conjunction with their background knowledge, they are producing incredible work, something of which I am truly proud! I now know that this development will help them in the future, and they will have the skills and ability to accomplish great things

Behind-the-scenes: preparing for a Robotics competition

For the first time, we are offering a behind-the-scenes opportunity to see how our students are applying their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) knowledge and skills to prepare for a FIRST® LEGO® League tournament. We invite you to join us during our evening Open House this Tuesday January 26 (6:00 pm -8:00 pm) at the RMS Academy Campus to see one of our Robotics competition teams, the #Swagbots Reincarnated, hone their robotics challenges and project presentation in preparation for the upcoming FIRST® LEGO® League Provincial Championship tournament taking place in Waterloo next Saturday January 30^th. We are excited to share the momentum and enthusiasm of this year’s Robotics Club, and showcase some of the our students’ great accomplishments in the field of Robotics. It is always a joy to see young minds at work. As you can imagine, this will be an energetic session full of enthusiasm.

During the session, our #Swagbots Reincarnated robotics team will be making final adjustments to the LEGO® robots which they have built specifically for the competition. The team members will be testing their robots’ performance on a number of challenges so as to gather as many points as possible on the FIRST® LEGO® League competition board course. You will have an opportunity to see first-hand the programming and adaptation skills the robotics team members have developed and are applying to compete in these types of competitions.

Our #Swagbots team will also be presenting their research project which demonstrates an innovative solution they have conceived to the current problem of recycling electronic waste. At the FIRST® LEGO® League tournaments, the teams are judged not only on their research project but also on how well they can are able to present it and convey its significance. These presentations are an integral part of the FIRST® LEGO® League tournaments.

Although robots are fun to watch, seeing and feeling the excitement of the team members is just as exhilarating! Mark this special event in your personal calendar and know that you, your family members, and friends are welcome to drop by anytime between 6:00pm and 8:00pm.

Making Math Meaningful

During the Fall term last year, Rowntree Montessori Schools’ Academy held its inaugural RMS Math Bowl Competition! Since the beginning of this academic year, students were very excited to take part in this contest, which consisted of two written in-class tests and a final group quiz. Every member of the class could participate in both of the written test qualifying rounds, which led up to the final quiz. This final phase of the Math Bowl was comprised of the top ten students from each class.

On the final competition day, the emcee for the quiz read out each question, which was also displayed for both teams. The excited and enthusiastic students worked with their teams to solve the problems and find solutions before their opponents could do the same. Each team sat around a table, all huddled together with a bell to ring as soon as they were ready with their answers, the six and seven year olds especially were in a new and dynamic learning situation! It was a unique experience for them as they had never tackled a competition like this before. Some felt challenged, while others breezed through each question, and several can still be heard in the halls of the school saying such things as “I am really good in Math!” At the end, each team congratulated the other and left the Quiz Venue sportingly. “It’s all about having fun with Math and not thinking of it as a tedious and boring subject,” said the two Math Coordinators, adding “the Competition was not only refreshing for all students, but also taught them to persist through problems and come up with diverse ways to solve them.” Our next assembly was also a day full of excitement as certificates were handed out to all participants and trophies awarded to each winning class for them to showcase in their classroom until the end of this academic school year!

The Rowntree Management and “STEM” Vertical Team, who are always seeking opportunities to “Nurture Tomorrow’s Achievers”, arranged this competition in order to enlighten students as well as help them see mathematics as a coherent subject and not just as multiple sets of complicated and unrelated rules. This will later be followed by our RMS’ Math Day in March, where students will have the opportunity to participate in Math Activities with shopping, money and banking facilities!

Rowntree Senior Robotics team qualifies for FLL Provincial Championship Tournament!

The Rowntree Senior Robotics club provides students in Grades 5–8 an opportunity to work together as a team while learning about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Students apply basic scientific principles and programming skills to create solutions to real-world problems using LEGO® robots. Each year, teams are given a challenge in which their robot must autonomously complete a series of “missions”. Teams must also create a solution to a problem which they have identified around a given theme, and present their solution to a panel of judges. Over the past few months, our two senior robotics teams worked tirelessly to build and program their robots while researching and creating their own innovative solutions for this year’s “Trash Trek” theme.

On Saturday, December 5^th two of our Rowntree Senior Robotics teams attended the 2015 FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) Regional Qualifier tournament at Tomken Road Middle School, along with their teacher-robotics coaches and parent coaches. It was a day full of excitement, enthusiasm, fun, and celebration! Throughout the day, teams demonstrated their various robot programs and presented their projects to panels of judges all while demonstrating the FLL Core Values of teamwork, cooperation, and gracious professionalism. The tournament provided a way for all teams to come together to motivate and inspire each other through their passion for STEM.

This year’s competition was a great success for both our teams. We are delighted to announce that one of our teams placed 2^nd overall and was awarded the Champions Award, which celebrates the team’s achievements in the robot missions as well as their demonstration of the Core Values! In addition to winning this prestigious award, the team has also been invited to compete in the FLL Provincial Championship Tournament taking place at the University of Waterloo in January of 2016!
