Last week, during a Social Studies class, our Senior Kindergarten students learned about the compass, directions and bearings. A compass is a drawing on a map that shows the cardinal directions.
A compass rose is a figure on a compass, map, nautical chart or monument. It is is used to display cardinal directions (north, east, south, and west) and their intermediate points.
Learning how to use a compass is an important life skill for a child to learn. The reason is simple, compass learning can help a child navigate on a hike or even while they are on a car trip. Basic compass concepts can really help in a variety of situations in life. Moreover, navigation knowledge cannot be overlooked. It is the most basic of all outdoor skills and has applications which carry over to everyday life.
With GPS being readily available in wireless phones and in cars these days, our students have learned that it is still important to have knowledge and understanding of being able to tell directions. After all, without having this understanding, you could end up lost with no idea which way to turn! The best way to avoid this kind of struggle is by learning how to utilize a compass, tell the direction, and to learn how to navigate.
At RMS, our students not only receive an award-winning structured and challenging academic programme, they learn life skills that they can apply at any stage in their life.
