Grade 8 Students Collaborating With Condiments
We love Science at Rowntree Montessori Schools! We even have a high school grade science lab. Recently, our grade 8s had a lesson on Viscosity where they changed the viscosity of different substances. Students conducted experiments using fluids such as maple syrup, ketchup, and mustard. Students were provided with a control experiment with the use of the fluid. The Grade 8s then made the viscosity higher and lower and noted the change in the fluids. Students worked in teams, which provided them with an opportunity to work on their collaborative skills.
The viscosity and collaborating with condiments experiment is one used in many industries outside of the education sector, including the food industry, with companies such as Heinz and French’s.
This experiment led to a discussion with students about the viscosity of certain liquid products such as hair shampoo, conditioner, gravies, and sauces such as ketchup and barbecue sauce. The students noted that although some brands may be less expensive, these brands tended to “runny” and have a lower viscosity level; whereas, the higher viscosity brands tended to be more expensive, yet you don’t need to use as much so you would save money in the long run.
Science is fun at Rowntree Montessori Schools. Students learn at the elementary level how they can manipulate the size, texture and shape of particles. Students learn that in order to change the viscosity of a substance without changing their states.
When students are able to apply science to “real life”, it helps make learning fun, easier, and more effective. Our students apply their scientific skills and knowledge when finding cross-curricular solutions to real-world STEM (Science, Technology, and Math) problems.
