Is your child ready?

The school year is going to look a little different this year, so we have prepared a little list of some helpful and easy tips to help ensure that your Kindergarten-aged child is ready for school this September.

Have your child practice washing their hands thoroughly and independently. Singing the alphabet song while washing their hands will ensure that they are washing for the correct length of time. For younger children, have them practice using the toilet independently as well. This may not seem like a big deal but when it’s your child’s first year at school, this is all new for them and as the saying goes, practice makes perfect!

Label all of your child’s belongings. This will help to ensure that their personal belongings do not get misplaced and will help your child recognize their items. This is especially true for our Rowntree Montessori School students who wear uniforms!

Practice opening and closing lunch containers and water bottles to promote independence during eating times. Remind your child to not touch any one else’s items. If you practice and remind your child at home, it will make the transition to the school setting easier.

Have your child practice putting on and removing their shoes independently. If possible, purchase shoes that can easily be put on and removed. We recommend shoes with Velcro straps, especially for our Pre-Kindergarten to Prep-ONE students.

Practice wearing a mask for a short period of time without touching it. Remind your child to try not to touch their faces as much as possible.

Practice going to bed earlier and getting up earlier. We have all been guilty of later nights and later mornings these past few months. Get your child ready for the fall routine by practicing going to bed earlier and getting up earlier so that those earlier school day mornings aren’t as difficult for them when the first day of school arrives.

The start of a brand new school year is only a little over 3 weeks away. To ensure that your child is Kindergarten ready, start practicing some of our helpful tips sooner, rather than later!
