RMS Celebrates Earth Day!

Rowntree Montessori Schools’ (RMS’) takes time each year to celebrate Earth Day. RMS uses a cross-curriculum approach to teaching, and we include a strong focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). In addition to this, we encourage our students to find solutions to real-world “wicked problems”. Specifically, one of our grade 3 classes has learned about sustainability and the environment. On April 22nd, the grade 3s made a special Earth Day video for all of our students and their families. RMS teaches our students the importance of being Earth Day advocates. Finally, it is important to note that our students learn the importance of recycling and protecting our planet for generations to come.

Sewing and Math, Who Would Have Thought?

Our grade 3 students recently used their sewing and math skills to help complete a math unit that focused on creating and designing a quilt. At first glance, this sounds like more of a Home Economics lesson than a math lesson but did you know that sewers and quilters alike actually use a lot of math skills, including measuring, counting, patterning and matching?

Our students applied their patterning skills from their math unit to design a quilt for a pioneer child. They used a combination of fabric and markers to create the quilt. This a great activity to do with your children while at home. All you need are some markers or crayons, some pieces of fabric or construction paper and some glue. When the children are done, they will have a colourful piece of art to display as well!

This lesson unit provided our students with a great opportunity to apply their math skills across other subjects. For example, students learned that patterns exist everywhere in our world and they are able to apply the skill of creating a pattern to create something useful while exploring the lives of pioneer children.

Hands on learning and application of skills and concepts across subjects teaches students that the world is indeed cross-curricular! It also encourages them to exercise their creativity and showcase their artistic skills.

A Cross-Curricular Approach to Black History Month

Applying School Lessons to Real Life

In a busy school with a complex curriculum, the ongoing challenge is to ensure that the students understand that everything that they learn is important. In addition to this, we try to teach our students how to apply what they learn in school, to real-life. One way to both find such efficiencies and deepen our students learning is by engaging in cross-curricular teaching and learning. We celebrate Black History Month each February, and instead of simply making posters and morning announcements, we have encouraged our students to highlight the achievements of African-Americans (and Canadians). Students use technology and other skills that they have learned at school to do this.

This year, our Grade 3 classes put their engineering skills to the test by designing a pop-up stage (see below) and by using videos linked through QR Codes to share their Black History Month stories. You can scan the codes below (using a QR-enabled smartphone camera or a QR-scanning app) to see some examples of the students’ work. Through one project, the students have learned about history, inclusion, and public speaking. In addition to this, students used two key components of STEM: Engineering and Technology.

Exploring the Problems with Global Urbanization in Grades 1 to 8

Over the last few weeks, our Grades 1 through 8 worked on our monthly STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Challenge. Rowntree has regular challenges throughout the year to further integrate STEM principles and apply them into the everyday teaching and learning. This year’s overarching theme revolves around urbanization and the various issues associated with growing cities. Students explored problems such as land fragmentation, habitat loss, and the effects of urban living on physical health, and so on. After brainstorming a solution as a class or group, students create a model and present using various tech tools.

Learning about Deforestation

One of the Rowntree Montessori Schools’ goals is to ensure that our students learn the skill of problem solving, but not just in the classroom. We want our students to take these skills and have the ability to apply them in everyday life. With this in mind, our students are tasked with developing solutions to real-world problems.

Recently our students were taught about the issue of Deforestation in their social studies class. Students learned about different countries that are affected by deforestation and had the opportunity to label these countries on a world map, using a Smart Board. Students had the chance to learn about a real world problem using state-of-the-art technology.

There are many benefits of students learning using technology, such as the Smart Board, in the classroom. Smart Boards are interactive, low maintenance, provide access to a wealth of online resources, are environmentally friendly, provide better visuals, accommodate different styles of learning, and help integrate technology in the classroom. Using Grocery Flyers to Teach Math Skills in Grade 3

At Rowntree Montessori Schools, our teaching method focuses on 21^st Century Learning. 21^st Century Learning refers to “the skills and technologies that will position students to succeed in a world that ever increasingly requires collaboration, critical thinking, adaptability, grit, perseverance and relies less on the learning of facts and data. The “how” and “why” of learning becomes central and is far more important than the “what” or “who” from past models. Students must approach lifelong learning with a flexible mindset as they tackle 21^st century issues. They must learn to work with and listen to a variety of points of view.[1]

This past week, one of our grade 3 classes tackled a “real world” task where they were provided with various grocery flyers, given a budget and asked to plan out their groceries for the week. Students were given time to look through different grocery stores’ flyers and research which store had the best prices and items that they wanted to purchase. Students were also asked to determine where the foods and items they chose originated from, and if the item came from live stock or was pre-packaged. This provided the class with an opportunity to use their math skills, social studies’ skills and communication skills. In addition, students learned that fresh foods are much healthier options than packaged foods. Students worked in groups as well, which provided them with an opportunity to problem-solve and work as a team.

Rowntree Montessori Schools believes that it is important for our students to have a connection with what they are learning and link their learning to a real world situation.

Students at our Central Park Campus Give Back to our Community this Thanksgiving

Thanks for Giving!

Every year, the Central Park Campus of Rowntree Montessori Schools has a Thanksgiving Food Drive to support a local charity as a way to show their support to our community.

When children are invested in selecting the charity, it can help them to more fully understand the importance of giving. Volunteering in the community is a good way for children to learn about gratitude, to do something positive for the community, and to appreciate what they have. It also helps them to learn valuable life skills, including teamwork, communication, time management, and goal setting. Even our youngest students can start to understand the importance of giving back. Running a food drive is a great way for young children to be involved in a community outreach program. Having the children pick out a few items to donate from the store or pantry is a great way to start!

This year, our grade 2/3 class researched various outreach programs in Brampton to choose a local charity to support. This in-class assignment helped the students to gain a better understanding of the services offered at each organization and the specific needs of the people being helped. After narrowing down their research to four organizations, the students presented their research to the other classes and took a tally of which charity they would like to support.

The grade 2/3 students were able to use their graphing skills to view their findings in a variety of charts.

After choosing to donate the food from our Food Drive to the Knight’s Table, the students then advertised the Food Drive to each class.

The students were eager to help pack up all the food to be delivered to the Knight’s Table.

The grade 2/3 students were excited to have been included in the decision-making process of where their generous food donations would go. This entire process has helped to give them a better understanding of the importance of giving back to the community.

Developing Future Engineers

Rowntree Montessori Schools starts developing future engineers at a young age. Recently, in a grade 2 & 3 class at our Central Park Campus, students worked on an Engineering activity that involved creating a working zip line. Their teacher guided the students through the process of how to build a zip line and then the students were provided with an opportunity to try out their newly acquired skills, while working through the mechanics of this exercise.

Students tried multiple strategies; with trial and error. One particular strategy did not work as planned, so the students concluded that by adding weight to the moving part of their structure, it gave the object the momentum it needed to move. The students were ecstatic when they realized that their creation finally worked! Click here to watch their project in motion.

This Engineering activity was very hands-on and student-led. The grade 2 and 3 teacher was there to guide the students through their experiment, and to lend a helping hand, without providing the students with the solution to their problem. During this activity, students were able problem solve and work together as a team of future Engineers. Rowntree Montessori School students use the methodical Engineering Design Process when tackling such problems.

This learning opportunity allowed the students freedom to create while learning new terms about science and connecting these words to the real world.

Exploring a Pioneer’s Life in 3D

“Hooray! It’s the project we’ve been waiting for in Grade 3, and it is here!” These were the words echoed by our Grade 3 students this year, as they were assigned the much awaited project of building a “3D Pioneer House”. The project assigned to them was done in three parts, where students were expected to research 1 of 4 types of pioneer homes, build a model of the home with a surrounding landscape, and prepare an oral presentation of the finished model in front of classmates and a green screen. The Grade 3 students could barely contain their excitement as Presentation Day began. Within minutes, the classroom started to take the shape of a mini gallery, with intricately decorated projects on display. Seen below is a student presenting her 3D shelter in front of a green screen.

Projects (whether a homework project or a classroom project), offer children the chance to be imaginative. They open the door for students to fully discover their artistic talents and creative skills, and to demonstrate their knowledge of the material learned in class. The oral presentation component of this project encouraged the generally timid children to build-up their public speaking skills, as they presented to a familiar audience of classmates.

As the students explored the lives of early settlers in Canada, it was evident by their enthusiasm and curiosity, that the 3D Pioneer House project was the highlight of their yearly learning experience. Their positive attitudes and yearning for active hands-on learning, was a clear indication of the success of Rowntree Montessori Schools’ award-winning approach to teaching, and our continued commitment to educating the next generation.
