On October 12, 2007 the provincial government made Family Day a statutory holiday in Ontario to match other provinces in Canada. In Ontario, we observe this holiday on the 3rd Monday of every February. The purpose of Family Day is simple: spend time with our nearest and dearest. It is a day that acknowledges that the family unit is important and a necessity in life. This year, Family Day falls on Monday February 15, and RMS couldn’t be more thrilled to be able to celebrate with our parents, students, and staff a day off with those we love the most!
The values of RMS fall directly in line with the greater Brampton community, recognising the importance of strengthening the familial bond. The city of Brampton offers a wide variety of family-based activities, from free skating to roasting marshmallows, along with ice painting paths. RMS encourages you to take advantage of some of the family-centered activities on this Family Day in order to further enjoy your time together. An article from Education.com perfectly sums up the reason for days, such as Family Day: this is time put aside to nurture the family bond. It states,
“Parents and families have the most direct and lasting impact on children’s learning and development of social competence. When parents are involved, students achieve more, exhibit more positive attitudes and behavior, and feel more comfortable in new settings.”
RMS is a proud supporter of implementing these values. We believe that time spent together is crucial for a child’s happiness, well-being, cognitive and emotional development. We believe that it is very important for families to spend time together in order to strengthen these principles. RMS enjoys having parents, grandparents, and relatives accompany us on field trips, attend special activities in school, and simply drop in to chat with the teachers and staff. Our belief is that forming a strong relationship between the school and home is vital for the positive development of the child, and that days such as Family Day, as well as any time put aside in general, are needed to live happy and healthy lives.
As Michael J. Fox once said, “Family is not an important thing, it’s everything.” RMS functions as a family. We hold this value dearly, and we nurture it every day. RMS wants you to enjoy this upcoming holiday with your loved ones in any manner you choose. It’s not about “what” you do, but “with whom” you spend the day.
