As a teacher for many years, I have noticed obvious benefits of addressing the growth of children from multiple angles. Namely, it is very beneficial to have extracurricular activities in correlation with academics. I’ve seen that students gain many positive attributes from sports that carry over into their academics.
Building self-esteem is an important part of sports, as well is being on a team. It is important that as educators, we use sports to instill confidence in our students. Doing so can be easier and more effective than simply attempting to improve confidence through an academic standpoint alone. Self-esteem is very important for students to develop in order for them to achieve their best thinking. They need a strong sense of self when interacting with teachers and other peers, especially when there is group work involved. Hence, building confidence outside of the regular class routine is substantially beneficial to students and teachers alike. Students who believe in themselves are more comfortable when asking questions and when completing independent research.
Experience has shown me that the more parts of the brain are being engaged, the greater will be the student’s success in every area of growth. Discipline gained in one area can become an intuitive response for other challenges. I see that as long as students learn discipline, it can positively affect their experience at school, along with proper direction and nurturing from teachers. I understand it to be my duty as a mentor to create open minds that are versatile, curious, and highly motivated for not just academics, but more importantly…for life. I find we do this very effectively with the well-rounded education system at Rowntree Montessori Academy.
