Rowntree’s ONE programmes are rooted in RMS’ newly focused Kindergarten Montessori Programme for 3 and 4 year olds (Junior Kindergarten) and a unique Prep-ONE full-time programme for 5 years old (Senior Kindergarten), both being launched this September for the 2015-16 school year and taking the place of our current Kindergarten programmes.  Both of these early years programmes are grounded in strong academics, not simply meeting but far exceeding Ministry of Education Curriculum Guidelines for JK and SK.  They prepare RMS students for an Outstanding Nurturing Education experience that has become the hallmark of Rowntree.

The Rowntree Montessori Schools’ Kindergarten Montessori Programme for JK aged children balances child-centered and teacher facilitated learning with high academic and social challenges. RMS’ Kindergarten Montessori Programme is not “play-based” learning with a Montessori twist – it’s a carefully designed programme that uses selected elements of the Montessori environment to realize an academic goal and encourage creativity, problem solving, social skills and independence in a deliberately prepared classroom. Promoting critical thinking and self-management skills, RMS’ Kindergarten Montessori allows children to experience the joy of learning, creating life-long learners.

Designed as an extension of its Kindergarten Montessori programme, Rowntree’s new Prep-ONE Programme for 5 year olds takes full advantage of the hands-on foundational learning that comes with a Montessori introduction to school and has been designed specifically to prepare students to successfully transition to Grade 1 to 8 programmes. Fostering early reading and computation, the Prep-ONE programme delivers an academically advanced curriculum in support of Rowntree’s ONE experience, which extends throughout the elementary years.

Students in both the Kindergarten Montessori and the Prep-ONE programmes benefit from differentiated and supportive learning environments that address a range of learning styles, interests, and abilities. RMS teachers meet every child where they need to be met.  At RMS, we believe that the greatest learning occurs when students are challenged slightly beyond the point where they can work without assistance, and in crucial areas of the curriculum, like Mathematics, students are introduced to curriculum expectations that are a grade level ahead of most other schools.  Our Prep-ONE students work from Grade 1 Math texts.   French is introduced in Kindergarten Montessori, well in advance of the Ministry’s Grade 4 Core programme expectations.   Computer skills development is encouraged for all Rowntree students (often notably lacking in other Montessori schools) and realize our commitment to 21^st Century Learning goals.
