Self Care During COVID-19
Is Laughter Really Good Medicine?
We have all heard that laughter really is the best medicine. And there is no doubt that the outbreak of COVID-19 has been stressful for Canadian families. Just hearing the word pandemic can make your heart beat a little faster. In addition to this, fear and anxiety of the unknown can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in adults and children alike. How can we manage this? Studies show that laughter can really help! Managing and coping with stress will make you, the people you care about, and your community, stronger, happier, and healthier.
The Importance of Self-Care and Laughter
Self-care has never been more important than now. While we are asked to self-isolate and socially distance ourselves from our family and friends, the level of anxiety and stress we feel can rise. Some may miss seeing and laughing with their friends. A little bit of laughter in our lives makes the toughest situations a little easier to get through. But how do we do this when we are supposed to socially distance ourselves from those we care about? What can we do to help ease some of this anxiety and practice self-care?
Laughter is a great self-care tool. To add a little more laughter in your day-to-day, watch a funny movie with the kids, read a funny book, call one of your less serious friends and share a few jokes. Better yet, organize a virtual House Party with your funniest friends. There are lots of apps where you can set up a group chat and even play a board game online. Studies show that laughter can even help with work and school performance.
While it’s important to stay apprised of current events, take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to the news, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting. Be sure to take time to unwind and do some other activities that you enjoy.
Remember that your children, teens especially, will react in part to how they see you react to the events around them. When adults and caregivers deal with the COVID-19 calmly and confidently, they can provide the best support for their children.
Dealing With Stress and Anxiety
This is a time to reassure your child or teen that they are safe. Let them know it is ok if they feel upset. Let them share what is making them feel anxious. Share with them how you deal with your own stress so that they can learn how to cope with you.
Lastly, during these troubling times, it’s important to try to keep up with regular routines, With schools being closed, create a schedule for learning activities and relaxing or fun activities. And don’t forget to find laughter in each and every day. As the doctor says, laughter truly is the best medicine!
