A school’s environment plays a large role in the development and enjoyment of school. In my opinion, that is one of Rowntree Montessori’s greatest strengths as a school: our positive and inviting environment transcends the classroom experience.
Part of what makes our school community so positive is the camaraderie of our students and teachers. Our student leadership team, RMAAC, have the privilege of helping monitor the hallways each morning, giving them the chance to interact with younger students who they would not otherwise see. These peer relationships are the foundation of our student body. Teachers’ relationships with students extends through all grade levels, beginning as soon as our students step out of the car. Our before-school and after-school programs also contribute to the environment of the school; they provide inviting and engaging experiences for students that surpass the regular textbook homework that is normally done during those times. Clubs and activities like Yoga, Cricket, Breakfast Club, and Bollywood Dance create an atmosphere for students that is engaging and exciting.
In addition to the skills students gain from their extracurricular activities, teachers also have the opportunity to interact with students who they don’t teach. Building relationships with the entire student body is a big part of being a well-rounded teacher; these clubs and activities foster positive interactions between teachers and students that wouldn’t occur otherwise.
Our House League program provides yet another avenue in which our students and teachers can interact and develop relationships that contribute to a positive school environment. Each month the whole school comes together to have some fun as a group in our school’s Spirit Assembly. These days provide students with the opportunity to cheer with their House Team as they watch teachers and peers compete to earn House Points.
These activities among the many others are what make our school special. We pride ourselves on our positive environment that helps us “Nurture Tomorrow’s Achievers”.
