The Rowntree Leadership Council (RLC) aims to give students with extraordinary leadership potential, the opportunity to develop and strengthen their leadership skills in positions of responsibility throughout the school. RMS intentionally provides our students with a learning environment designed to meet individual student needs that promotes personal development and social growth. Grade 7 and Grade 8 students have the opportunity to apply for a role on the RLC over the summer, through submitting a detailed application and completing a rigorous interview process. This year, eight Grade 8 students and four Grade 7 students were selected for the 2018-2019 RLC.
At RMS, our primary goal with the RLC is to develop young leaders, while at the same time creating an atmosphere where every student feels accepted and important, and works as a role model for others in the school. The leadership opportunity will focus on mastering self-awareness, communication, goal setting, organization, promoting acceptance, problem solving, and working as a team to build a vision of inclusivity throughout the RMS school community.
At Rowntree Montessori Schools, we strive to ensure that all members of the RLC develop essential leadership skills through multiple hands-on learning experiences throughout the year. One of the important responsibilities of each RLC member is to model good behaviour in the school, throughout the hallways and even during assemblies. Members create monthly posters and materials highlighting the value of each month, such as leadership, ambition, resilience or tolerance for example. They are also in charge of putting together poems, speeches, songs or other performances during monthly Student of the Month assemblies. Some of our members are even tutors in the school, helping younger students with their academic work. Being a member of the RLC requires a high degree of commitment and a willingness to showcase positive character attributes. Being an RLC member is a privilege and an honour for our students, as they are truly leaders in the school, identified not only by their maroon tie, but more often, by their positive attitude and commitment to the betterment of the school.
