As part of our Science curriculum, and in time with Earth Day and Earth Hour, the Grade 1 students at Rowntree Montessori have been learning how we can help keep our planet clean.
We learned ways we can reduce, reuse, and recycle at school and home, watched videos about the recycling process and what happens at the recycling center, and even examined packaging in their lunches to see what was recyclable or reusable, and what was waste. Finally, our Grade 1 students were ready to put what they learned into practice.
During the month of April , our Grade 1 students conducted their very own recycling program in collaboration with one of the month’s Value of the Month they have learned – responsibility. Students were responsible for going throughout the school to each of the classrooms at lunch time to collect recyclables, and setting aside plastic bottles and paper materials to be used for our upcoming Science Fair. Lastly, students were responsible for placing plastic products and other left over recyclables into our school recycling bins.
With this activity, the Grade 1 students were able to get practical experience with the concepts they were learning in class, be active in our school community, and demonstrate responsibility, the value of the month.
And as for keeping the environment clean? Well, the Grade 1s will tell you – that’s just being responsible!
