The opportunity to participate in a French play supports the language learning process, and at the same time, offers students a break from the everyday routine of French class, making learning a second language fun and engaging. Recently at Rowntree Montessori Schools, our Grade 2 and Grade 3 students from the Central Park Campus performed “Les Trois Petits Cochons” or “Three Little Pigs” for an audience of friends and family at the 2019 Spring Concert. The students did an excellent job memorizing their lines in French, and at integrating Visual Arts into their performance.
As seen in the video above, taking part in a French play provides a useful context for learning a large amount of vocabulary, and also provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the importance of teamwork and helps students build confidence in the second language. Students also cooperated with each other throughout the performance in a second language, which allowed everyone to interact and communicate effectively. This well-known play created the optimum conditions to promote French learning, and it was a great way to assess each student’s progress in a non-traditional way. We are proud of everyone who participated, and look forward to more great French performances in the years to come.
