At the Rowntree Montessori Schools Academy Campus, students have the opportunity to participate in the Model United Nations Club, which runs from September to April. Model United Nations, often referred to as MUN, is an extracurricular activity where students role-play in the position of a delegate in one of the many United Nations Committees. Our students join hundreds of students in Grades 7-12 from schools across Southern Ontario for two conferences each year.
In February, our team of sixteen delegates attended King’s MUN at King’s Christian Collegiate in Oakville. For many of our students, this conference offered an opportunity to learn proper debate procedure and etiquette through their Tutorial Level Committee, which taught the students everything they needed to know about Model United Nations. The students had a fantastic first conference of the year. In fact, our students won awards for Best Position Paper and Best Delegate from within their committees, of over approximately 30 students.
In April, our MUN team attended their second conference called Appleby College Model United Nations (ACMUN) in Oakville. By this time, our newer delegates were feeling much more confident in their abilities to debate world issues. The teachers observed considerable improvements in the amount of speaking time the delegates contributed, and several of our students even took the initiative to present working resolution papers in front of their entire committee! We were fortunate to have another student return from this conference with an award for Best Delegate.
Model United Nations is an enriching experience for our students. This activity helps to increase student confidence through speaking in front of a broad audience, and offers several opportunities to collaborate with people who have different cultural backgrounds and perspectives on world issues. It is also rewarding for the teachers and parents who get the chance to see our talented students working towards solving real-world issues. We had a very successful year, and we cannot wait to do it all again next year!
