Hands On Pizza Fraction Fiesta

Acquiring a solid foundation in mathematical concepts at an early age is critical to a child’s future learning and development of Math skills. Some concepts are more easily absorbed than others. The concept of fractions is one that often makes it to the “I don’t get it!” list. Despite their presence in our daily lives, fractions can be a challenging unit for some students to fully comprehend. The use of manipulative material when teaching these concepts is an effective method that has proved to be highly stimulating and thereby successful in helping students of all age groups to absorb and consolidate mathematical concepts.

Recently Grade 3 students at RMS Private School in Brampton engaged in a fun activity of making their own pizza. Seen in the video below is a student preparing her pizza while describing the fractions of toppings that she will use.

These types of learning tasks serve a dual purpose. Firstly, students get to interact with mathematical concepts in a tangible form, while also gaining a clear knowledge of its relevance in the real world. Introducing challenging concepts with familiar everyday items, especially the edible kind, is sure to infuse a zest for Math in students who might fear the subject, and withdraw from it because of a notion of not being able to grasp the theory. Whatever the case may be, the Fraction Pizza Fiesta was more than just a fun and engaging activity. It not only cemented the concept, but it also satisfied the cravings of a class full of pizza lovers!

Learning about the Environment

At RMS, we recognize the value of teaching students about ecology and the environment. According to the NDF (2013), “teaching young children about ecology and the environment will offer them lessons that will last them a lifetime. If children learn to respect and care for the world they live in and the organisms within it from a young age, they will help to preserve it for the next generation. The goal is that they will become advocates for protecting nature.”

Recently Grade 3 students at the Academy Campus learned how to germinate kidney bean seeds as part of an application task of a Plant’s Life cycle. Students soaked bean seeds and placed them in clear plastic bags containing wet paper towels. The bags were all hung on the classroom window which brings in a lot of bright sunlight. After two weeks of patient waiting, watering and nurturing their seeds, the students finally had a chance to take a first look at their seeds. Seen here in the video are a very delighted class of students unwrapping their seed surprises and placing them in soil.

A few weeks later, the Grade 3 students were absolutely ecstatic to find their bean plants bearing fruit! The weather might be cold outside, but Grade 3 is keeping warm and nurturing their kidney bean plants to perfection! Some of the ideas include creating a wildlife area, sponsoring an animal, playing games and reading books that teach about wildlife and the environment, or encouraging your child to write about their favourite animal or plant.

Teaching Financial Literacy Early

Recently our Grade 3 students at the Academy Campus had the opportunity to learn some fundamental skills to support their learning of financial literacy through the use of currency calculations on interactive whiteboards. Below is a video of students working in pairs to count money spent on purchases, then calculate the change from a given amount. Teaching the concept of spending and saving through the interactive whiteboard and corresponding applications is very enjoyable for students, and extremely useful to start at a young age in preparation for more challenging financial concepts taught in later years at RMS.

We believe it is very important for students to learn the first skills necessary for financial literacy as early as Kindergarten here at Rowntree Montessori Schools private schools. Experts such as Toronto financial literacy analyst Tricia Barry agree that these types of lessons need to be introduced to students at a young age. In fact, for public schools, Barry suggests that “mandated financial literacy lessons need to be introduced by Grade 6, including incorporating the concepts into math class.” However here at RMS Private Schools, we teach these concepts even earlier, giving students a head start towards perfecting their ability to succeed in their futures, when it comes to the topic of finance and related management.
