Differentiated Instruction (DI) are various teaching and learning methods that encompass a variety of techniques to meet the specific learning needs of students. Teachers do this by varying the content, presentation, or process of learning to ensure the success of all students. This is important because students learn in different ways. This teaching method is often engaging when a teacher relates discussions, in-class work, and even projects to real-life scenarios. Certain techniques allow students the ability to place themselves in a particular scenario that is relevant to them.
Another way to engage students in building their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills is to emphasize the importance of reading for meaning. When the student analyzes the context of everything being read, whether a novel in Language class, or a question being tackled in Math, his or her learning is better retained. Our Grade 2 students particularly enjoy learning when the teacher takes the content being focused on in math for that week, and has the student apply it to a written word problem.
We also often use fun learning methods like real life scenarios to engage students in the reading, writing, and problem solving process. We then ask the students to read the question on their own and underline the important information. They visualize the scenario and ask themselves exactly what they think the question is asking them to do. Students use pictures, numbers, and words to solve the problem. This not only facilitates the mathematical processes, but also makes use of reading and critical thinking skills. Overall, using these different techniques can help teach skills which are vital to build at a young age.
