The Grade 3 students are learning about Plants, their growth and germination. In Science class we conducted an experiment with kidney beans to observe the germination process. The students were amazed to see the kidney beans germinate and start to sprout.
This activity creates a moment for the students to better understand the growth and development of plants and to make cross-curricular connections to the unit of deforestation. Through this unit they will also learn about the impact that plants and forests have in our world. The students will learn to foster a love for nature and learn to actively care for the environment and give back to nature.
This activity fits into the broader context of education as it creates an opportunity for students to extend their learning beyond the classroom. It is also explained further in the article “Deeper Learning: Why Cross-Curricular Teaching is Essential” by Ben Johnsen.
