Rowntree students from grades 3 to 8 will be participating in the 2015 Student Vote on October 15, 2015, which runs parallel to the federal general elections. In preparation for this vote, the grade 5 students worked collaboratively within a small group dynamic to research information regarding the upcoming election on October 19, 2015. Within their peer circle, they investigated Canada’s political parties, their leaders, and information regarding their platforms and campaigns. Once the background work was completed, each group designed a political poster. The grade 5 class then invited grade 3 to 8 students and teachers for a seminar in their classroom. Each student from grade 5 had an equal opportunity to present information regarding the voting process, the candidates, and the responsibility of global citizenship.
The grade 5 students used their acquired knowledge from this year’s curriculum objectives to discuss the basics of government and democracy, the right to vote, and how our Canadian electoral system works. The purpose of the Student Vote Program is to educate and engage students in the voting process. Through this mock vote, students become better prepared for taking part in the voting system in their near futures. They are encouraged to consider their own beliefs, perspectives, and values, and then align them with a political party which best represents their ideals. Through this tactile approach, students are able to take an introspective view of their place and importance in our community.
Rowntree is proud to be able to educate our students about democracy and civic education objectives. The Student Vote Program, which is commissioned by Elections Canada, is a great way to engage our students in meaningful educational practices which is right in line with 21st century learning. We look forward to discovering whom our students and our country will vote for as our next Prime Minister of Canada.
In the meantime let us keep in mind these famous words: “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” – Henry Ford
We look forward to seeing you and sharing with you the private school community of which we are so proud!
