Science is simply the word we use to describe a method of organizing our curiosity.
– Tim Minchin –
The world of science has always served to ignite a powerful sense of curiosity and adventure in young learners. Rowntree’s recent Science Fair event, “Science Re-Invented”, aptly demonstrated this long-standing truth!
The school’s annual Science Fair competition took a different path this year for our grades 5 to 8 students. Rather than using the scientific method for research and testing, students took on a new challenge and used the problem solving method for technology development, and created a brand new invention! This challenge formed the perfect platform for our school, where the students are actively engaged using the STEM approach to learning through the use of technology in helping to develop their new invention. The students were able to clearly see the interrelation amongst Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
The Grades 1-4 students had a choice to enter the Science Fair competition, and they used the inquiry-based method where they developed a hypothesis based on a topic of their choice, and found the appropriate apparatus to test the hypothesis in order to form a conclusion.
“Science Re-Invented” was a week-long event which culminated in the Science Fair activity days. The highlight of the week was competition day, when students presented their experiments and inventions to a panel of visiting expert judges. The competition was a great success! Our students’ enthusiasm was evident when we had some of the younger students come in the next day to submit a topic for next year! By nurturing our learners’ scientific curiosity, this event contributes, in some small way, to our larger, collective goal: to continually advance science to serve society worldwide.
Once again, Rowntree’s young inventors and scientists impressed the judges by proving their scientific, technology and engineering knowledge, being well versed in critical thinking, and explaining the scientific and problem solving process. Awards for the top projects were assigned to these super scientists:
Competition Winners
Grade 1: Chiara M.
Grade 2: Kismet S.
Grade 3: Bronwyn T.
Grade 4: Preetish G.
Grade 5: Jasleen K.
Grade 6: Ethan A.
