Annual Terry Fox Run at RMS!
The annual Terry Fox Run has become a fall tradition in Canada, with more than 650 communities, big and small, urban and rural, fundraising for cancer research. RMS will once again be participating in this important fundraising initiative and our students and teachers will be running, walking, jumping, hiking, biking, skipping, and keeping active, all whilst learning about Terry Fox and his incredible feats!
Terry Fox was eighteen years old when he began his running journey across Canada. He displayed an unusual determination to achieve the goals he set for himself but his orbit was local – family, school, sports and friends. Terry’s cancer diagnosis of osteogenic sarcoma was above the knee, and resulted in his leg being amputated.
Terry’s personal experience and research led him to a simple conclusion – more money was needed for cancer research. And so, in the modest but motivated style that would prove to be his trademark, Terry started training and planning for his cross-Canada run to raise funds for cancer research. He dipped his prosthetic leg in the Atlantic Ocean on April 12th, 1980 and proceeded to unite Canadians in a way never before, nor since, seen. The only thing that could have stopped Terry from reaching the Pacific Ocean did. Cancer returned in his lungs and he was forced to stop on September 1st, 1980 after having run 5,373 kilometres.
RMS supports the development of well-rounded individuals, by teaching them character development and values, and helping our students build the confidence to share his or her talents and skills, as well as to have empathy and compassion for those in need. RMS students learn about giving back to the communities that they live in, as well as participating in important causes, such as the Terry Fox Fun.
The Terry Fox Run is an annual Rowntree Montessori Schools’ tradition. For a second consecutive year, we have set a goal to collectively walk across Canada. We hope that this beautiful day will get everyone active and inspire some more donations to the Terry Fox Foundation.
After less than one week, we have collectively traveled more than 815 km across Canada. Having started in St. John’s, NL, as Terry did, we are only 85km away from traveling across Newfoundland and making it to the mainland.
As of this morning, we have raised $475 for cancer research!
Let’s keep on moving (and keep on tracking those km)!
