We’ve all been looking forward to this year’s 100th Day of School. The students’ excitement for the day makes all the work put in worth it! The students get right into the action with a celebration full of activities, all of which include the number of the day, 100!
We like to begin our day by laying out all of the interesting things the students have brought in to showcase the number “100.” All sorts of things are brought in: from smarties to goldfish crackers, buttons to veggies, and even hair ties and marbles. Students then have the opportunity to showcase their 100 items and show the rest of the class their items with pride. The day is filled with the reading of books, all containing the number of the day 100, and all the different ways in which we can get there! Classes also partake in crafts to showcase our special number, and the teachers always make sure to keep an open dialogue with the students as we go about the day. This spectacular day is a huge success as the little mathematicians are able to take a break from their usual routines to focus solely on mathematics in the most creative and entertaining ways!
I find mathematics to be of the utmost importance for our energetic learners as it has the ability to give them a wider perspective of the world around them. It will help them calculate probabilities when assessing situations, as well as recording statistics to project future expectations, with no limit of practical uses. As soon as our young students start with their number recognition, one can see how they begin to attribute mathematics to more and more things around them. Calculations become integrated into their day to day experiences in life and in the classroom because, realistically, numbers are truly everywhere! Students are also given more tangible experience with patterns; this allows for the visual and kinesthetic learners of the group to handle and work with these 100 bits and pieces and really grasp this pivotal concept.
For me, the 100th Day of School is an important milestone. The discussions around the number 100 allow the students to gain a more profound and concrete perception of math and numbers. The glint of light in their eyes is so apparent when you see them showing off their one hundred items to their fellow classmates! The fact that they had to acquire 100 of something just develops their awareness of what that number actually is and means. With this, parents also get the chance to be involved in the discovery of the finding these 100 items with their children, and view their growth in number sense and numeration, all while continually building their familial bond.
