Most Science Programmes are based on “facts learning and acquisition of knowledge”. At Rowntree Montessori School, we focus on the development of analytical and scientific thinking, creativity and engineering skills. The programme, although based on the Ontario Curriculum, surpasses all its set expectations in all levels, by emphasizing:
- Scientific inquiry: Students are encouraged to address questions about the nature of science, formulate hypothesis, conduct focused investigations and record their results in a lab report.
- Technological Problem Solving: This is a hands-on approach, where students are given the opportunity to apply their newly acquired scientific knowledge to design and build projects and models, like generators, motors, bridges etc.
- Relating Science to Society: Students are guided through discussions and real life experiences to relate what they have learned in the lab to the world outside. They identify issues, alternatives and use different research means to reflect, decide, take action, evaluate and communicate findings and conclusions.
At the end of the school year, students get an opportunity to show case their work during the Annual Science Fair, featuring all their unique and special creations made out of mostly recycled materials.
