- Fundamentals: The study of Mathematics has been demonstrated to be one of the most dependent upon cumulative knowledge, understanding, and application. It is therefore taught at Rowntree Montessori Schools in a planned and coordinated sequence, ensuring competence with one area prior to proceeding to the next. While electronic devices such as calculators can be beneficial when completing complex equations, it is vital for all students to develop a mastery of such basic skills as multiplication tables in order to succeed with more advanced applications.
- Advancement: At RMS, students in the primary and junior divisions study Mathematics at one grade level ahead, (e.g. Grade 2’s study Grade 3 Math, etc.) in order to bring new material to sufficiently challenge the children as they become prepared for new concepts and procedures. By working a year ahead, students become fully prepared to face the challenges of the intermediate and senior division math courses, and have an opportunity for additional consolidation and practice as more challenging concepts are introduced.
- Enrichment and Competition: The “Math Club” is a well attended and high profile group at RMS, as it brings together those who are especially inclined and interested in Mathematics, in a forum for healthy practice and competition. Students members of the club, under the guidance of Math specialist teachers, practice for involvement in such competitions as the Canadian National Mathematics League and the GAUSS (University of Waterloo) competition, for which RMS holds a very high reputation for success.
