Preparing for Lifelong Learning

The Rowntree Montessori Schools Prep-One Programme offers a unique, hands-on approach designed to challenge and nurture 5-year-olds, building the skills and confidence needed to reach their full potential. As an extension of our Kindergarten Montessori programme, it combines Montessori foundational learning with 21st-century practices to prepare students for a smooth transition to Grade 1. With small class sizes and individualized care, students grow academically, socially, and emotionally in a safe, engaging environment that fosters curiosity, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.

Rowntree Education

Our programme helps children develop confidence in their abilities, emphasizing literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking skills. It broadens their experiences, fosters communication and problem-solving, and prepares them for lifelong learning. Students are encouraged to discover their strengths, interests, and abilities while developing relationships and constructive roles as members of their community.

Oral Language Skills

Oral language is developed through rich, hands-on materials, group discussions, and reading circles. Phonics lessons, modeling proper language, and peer learning further support communication skills and vocabulary development.

Beginning Reading Skills

Early reading skills are nurtured through teacher read-alouds, shared reading experiences, and independent reading time. Students practice sequencing stories, making predictions, phonics, and exposure to early readers and spelling exercises.

Written Language Skills

Writing skills are developed through journaling, printing, drawing, and creative book-making, combined with grammar, spelling, and vocabulary lessons. Students explore a variety of writing materials and digital tools, including Google Chromebooks, to strengthen early writing and computer skills.

Mathematical Skills

Mathematical understanding is built through the Grade One curriculum, reinforced with hands-on Montessori materials. Students explore addition, subtraction, and problem-solving using tactile tools like stripboards to connect concrete experiences with abstract concepts.

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor development is supported through hands-on activities like cutting, coloring, and manipulating Montessori materials such as the Geometric Cabinet and Counting Chains. These exercises enhance coordination, control, and readiness for writing tasks.

At RMS, our programme combines hands-on Montessori experiences with 21st-century learning to prepare 5-year-olds for a confident transition to Grade 1.

Other Language

Students receive two 40-minute French lessons each week, using songs, games, and interactive activities to bring the language to life. They develop oral skills through individual presentations and are encouraged to communicate confidently, applying basic grammar and cultivating linguistic awareness.

Science and Social Studies

Students explore their world using Montessori materials such as globes, maps, and water and landform cards, while conducting experiments to observe, infer, and draw conclusions. Lessons help children describe natural occurrences and understand social and scientific concepts through hands-on learning.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Students participate in monthly field trips to theatres, local farms, and community events, extending learning beyond the classroom and providing real-world experiences that complement their academic development.
